SANE fun walk/run supports exam services for sexual assault victims

In honor of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the St. Anthony Summit Medical Center Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) team is hosting its fifth annual fun walk/run on April 27.

Funds raised for the event will go to support the SANE program, which provides specialized care to sexual assault victims. The program is supported by funds from grants and fundraising such as the walk/run.

SANE has been around since August of 2010, the result of collaboration between Advocates for Victims of Assault, the District Attorney's office and the St. Anthony Summit Medical Center. Trained and certified nurses are on call 24/7 to respond to cases of sexual assault, providing not only specialized care but assisting in evidence gathering should the need for prosecution be necessary.

"We feel very fortunate that as a rural community we have the SANE program," said Amy Jackson, director of Advocates for Victims of Assault. "A lot of rural communities don't have the resources or the manpower to staff a program that requires the 24-hour ability of the SANE nurses."

The walk/run will take place in Frisco, starting behind the hospital on the recpath at 11 a.m. for runners and 11:15 a.m. for walkers. This year the event will also be timed for those wishing to record their speed. The 5K will loop from the hospital down into the town of Frisco and then back again. There will be a water station, provided by Advocates for Victims of Assault, as well as a light lunch afterward at the hospital cafe. Dogs and strollers are welcome. Those interested will have the opportunity to tour the SANE exam room at the Emergency Department open house and learn more about the program.

In addition to raising money, the event aims to raise awareness and educate about sexual violence. Statistical information will be found at each marker throughout the race to spread information.

"It's a great event and it's super fun," Jackson said.
