Hendricks: Hamner votes on her 'core values'

It appears that one of our residents isn't familiar with the concept of a representative democracy as we currently have it. Rep. Hamner was elected not to slavishly follow the polls in her district but to listen to the debate and vote her conscience. We elect representatives rather than have direct democracy for many reasons, primary of which is to allow more reasoned debate. Federalist Paper No. 10 warns against factions or "a number of citizens, whether amounting to a minority or majority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."

That said, the recent firearms regulations passed by the state legislature will meet constitutional challenge (they have before) and have the support of the vast majority of the citizens of the United States and Colorado.

While this particular gent might not like the way Rep. Hamner voted, he shouldn't expect her to sway with the prevailing wind. She has core values and votes them.

I applaud her courage.
