Owls, Owls and More Owls photo exhibit at Arts Alive

Renowned wildlife photographer Richard Seeley, of Silverthorne, will be exhibiting his captivating photographic images of owls at the Arts Alive Gallery in Breckenridge. Seeley is the featured artist for March, and the exhibit will be on display through the end of the month.

Owls are amazing creatures. They can see prey in the dark, triangulate the sound of potential prey with a unique positioning of their ears and fly with stealth accuracy using special feathers that silence wing noise. Seeley has traveled the United States, including Alaska, and in Canada and Africa photographing the elusive owl. Owl images on display in the exhibit include the great horned owl, barn owl, screech owl, eagle owl, burrowing owl, hawk owl and snowy owl.

The public is cordially invited to attend a reception on Saturday, March 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the gallery and share their wildlife stories with the artist. Arts Alive Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and is located in La Cima Mall, 500 S. Main St. in Breckenridge. To learn more about Seeley, visit http://www.richardseeleyphotography.com.

Free screening of ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ in Breck

The Breckenridge Backstage Theatre will host a free screening of the film “Hound of the Baskervilles” on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m.

Returning to his family’s manor house on the lonely moors after his father dies under mysterious circumstances, Sir Henry Baskerville is confronted with the mystery of the supernatural hound that supposedly takes revenge upon the Baskerville family. The famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson, are brought in to investigate in this classic film.

Concessions will be available for purchase at the film, which serves as a prelude to the hysterical live theater version of the play, opening Thursday, March 12, and running through Saturday, April 4. Prior to the film, Backstage Theatre artistic director Christopher Willard and three very talented comedic actors will compare and contrast the 1959 film and the very different 2014 play.

The Backstage Theatre is located at 121 S. Ridge St. in Breckenridge. For more information on the film or the play, or to purchase tickets to the play, visit http://www.backstagetheatre.org or call (970) 453-0199.

Annual Ski Joring, Crystal Carnival return to Leadville

Downtown Leadville will be buzzing with horses, cowboys, skiers, snowshoers and mountain bikers during the 66th annual Ski Joring and Crystal Carnival weekend, Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8.

Ski joring, an annual tradition in Leadville since 1949, consists of horse-and-rider teams pulling skiers down a snow-packed road over jumps while spearing rings in a timed competition.

Additional snow-themed events round out the weekend, including Nordic sprints, a winter mountain bike race, a paintball biathlon and, new this year, a full moon barbecue, snowshoe tour on the Mineral Belt Trail and swim at the Lake County Aquatic Center.

This year’s ski joring event will include three classes on Saturday and again on Sunday: the Open Class, for experienced competitive teams; the Sport Class, for beginners; and the Legends Class, for experienced teams who are getting a little long in the tooth for the Open Class. Skiers must prequalify to compete in the Open Class. New competitors are welcomed.

More details and online registration are available at http://www.leadvilleskijoring.us.

Blue River Bistro has music five days a week

Start the week at Blue River Bistro on Sunday, March 1, with free live music from guitarist and vocalist Rob Wivchar. Around the Denver area, his varied set list and high-quality musicianship find him performing in a wide variety of locales and private events. And attending Wivchar’s shows actually helps the environment: 30 percent of all the money that ends up in the tip jar goes straight to environmental charity organizations.

Mark Schlaefer brings his delta blues to the Blue River Bistro on Monday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 4. Schlaefer writes personal acoustic blues about his life in the Colorado High Country. “Even though these songs were written above 9,000 feet, they still sound firmly rooted in delta mud,” the artist said of his album, “The Sweet Honey Mead,” released in 2002. “Dressed in plain spoken words, that sound cuts to the core of the human experience and reveals the indomitability of our souls.”

The Blue River Bistro in Breckenridge welcomes the Jerry Weiss Duo on Tuesday, March 3. This talented, professional, flexible and original duo plays all styles of instrumental jazz, from swing to bop, Latin to contemporary, funk and even some jazzed-up pop tunes.

The Blue River Bistro in Breckenridge welcomes Jon Wirtz’s Nuskool Modern Jazz on Thursday, March 5. Over the past 10 years, Wirtz has performed mainly as a sideman, having worked with Grammy-winning producers Malcolm Burn and John Macy, and shared the stage with artists including Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Robbie Krieger, Melissa Etheridge, Big Head Todd and the Monsters and even Justin Timberlake.

The music runs from 5 to 10 p.m. each day, and there’s no cover. Visit http://blueriverbistro.com for more information.
