Summit Girl Scouts invite girls, community to learn more

Summit Girl Scouts invite girls, community to learn more

This weekend, Summit County Girl Scouts are inviting all girls to come experience Girl Scouting fun for themselves. A group of older scouts will lead activities highlighting the Girl Scout program and leadership experience at the Community and Senior Center in Frisco on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. The event is open to girls in grades K-12 and their parents, with a special focus on grades K-5.

Joan Jardon, a troop leader from Summit Cove, helped organize the event. “It will be a fun and active afternoon for the girls. The older girls who are running the activities are so excited to share their skills with new scouts, and meanwhile, we’ll have parents from a bunch of different schools to meet with new parents to answer all their questions.”

The Girl Scout program has undergone a transformation in recent years, and while many of the legacy activities persist (such as camping, entrepreneurship, service projects and earning badges), there’s a renewed focus on STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math. Girl Scouts of the USA recently partnered with Dell Computers to create an interactive experience called “Be the Video Game Developer.” In Colorado, other initiatives include preventing bullying, connecting girls to the world through international travel and, most recently, reaching out to sister Girl Scouts affected by the flooding on the Front Range and plains.

For information about signing up your daughter or volunteering with the Girl Scouts, call Cricket Hawkins at (970) 379-9059 or Cricket.Hawkins@gscolorado.org.
