Sometimes, you have to give the people what they want.
In response to query after query from fans of her PBS holiday specials and guides to entertaining, local chef and author Christy Rost recently launched a YouTube channel devoted to fresh, budget-friendly suggestions and solutions for seasonal gatherings, everyday meals, do-it-yourself projects and more.
“It’s not unusual for me to receive emails from viewers that say, ‘Oh, Christy, where else can I see you? Where else can I see what you’re doing in other areas?’” Rost said. “So this was kind of my answer to what some of my fans have been asking for. They’ve been asking for me to share more how-tos with them, and they want to watch.”
Sharing a passion
The series of instructional videos, titled “Christy Rost Cooks: Celebrating Life & Home,” can be found at www.youtube.com/user/christyrostcooks and is mostly filmed at Rost’s home, Swan’s Nest, in Breckenridge. Rost said she’s wanted to start the project for a couple of years as a way to share her passion for home and family, cooking and decorating. In January, the time seemed right, and the concept was put into motion.
“It wasn’t difficult to figure out what I wanted to do,” Rost said. “It’s kind of a natural extension of what I’m always doing anyway, but now I get to share it with lots of people, in particular, my Facebook friends.”
The inaugural video about simple touches to spice up your Mardi Gras table setting was posted to the YouTube channel on Sunday, March 2. The second video, which is now online, shows how to bake a simple Irish soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day. Rost said new videos would be posted about every 10 days to two weeks.
“It’s going to feature cooking, home decor, gardening, cocktail parties, wine pairings — all the things that I love to do, and so it will be very seasonal, which I think is really important,” she said.
Rost said she is already experiencing one of the things she was looking forward to getting from the YouTube channel: instantaneous reviews.
“It’s really fun to get immediate feedback,” she said, “because with a television show, it’s filmed so far ahead and there are so many different facets to it and it’s months and months until we see the final product. (With YouTube), it goes up and, within hours, I am starting to get feedback.”
YouTube allows Rost to meet her goal of sharing her passions with a larger base of people, in addition to her current fans.
“I want more and more people to find me, and this is a really good way to do it,” she said. “This is a really good way for me to reach a whole new group of people, younger people in particular — singles, professionals, young families — people who would love to do more things at home themselves, but maybe aren’t quite sure how to do it.
“Today’s population, they’re going to YouTube all the time — Facebook, Pinterest, all the different social media outlets — to learn how to do things and to share their own creativity, so this is a way to share with them.”
