Silverthorne Recreation Center celebrates Water Safety Month

The town of Silverthorne and Silverthorne Recreation Center are recognizing National Water Safety Month throughout the month of May.

“Traditionally, the aquatics area is shut down in May for pool maintenance,” said Suzanna Barth, program pool manager. “This has been moved to the fall, allowing us to shift our focus for this spring and create some new, exciting activities. We are excited to fill this month with activities to promote a safe summer in and around the water.”

Activities will target age-appropriate groups. Preschool children (morning times) will become familiar with Longfellow the Whale; school-aged students (after-school times) will fill out a water-safety passport highlighting activities completed throughout the month; and adults (variable times) will gain free swimming tips in one of many scheduled lessons.

Saturday, May 10, features “Hands Only” CPR. This class will help you gain confidence in responding to an emergency situation, as chances are the person you save will be a loved one. Finally, there will be free entry from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 31, with a scavenger hunt for all ages at 9:30 a.m. and life guard/emergency-services demonstration at 10 a.m.

Summit County has an amazing number of lakes, rivers and pools to enjoy, and the Silverthorne Recreation Center wants to promote a love of water, water activities and getting out to enjoy these amenities. There is truly something for the entire family during this fun, informative month of water-safety awareness.

“Drowning is the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death of children ages 1 to 5,” Barth said. “The Silverthorne Recreation Center will continue to do our part in spreading awareness about this preventable tragedy.”
