Elizabeth Hainen, solo harpist of The Philadelphia Orchestra, returns to Breckenridge Music Festival’s Winter Encore Series on Friday, March 6, with a varied program featuring music for solo harp, with assistance from percussionist David DePeters on vibraphone.

Hainen brings a program with selections of music from many sources, old and new. The night opens with a suite of musical transcriptions from the Baroque era, including preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach from the collections “The Well-Tempered Clavier” and “Seven Little Preludes,” a pair of works from the French Baroque by Francois Couperin, and “Allegro Moderato” from Handel’s Concerto in B-flat. In tribute to the beautiful Summit County backdrop of her Breckenridge concert, “Fantaisie for Harp” from “The Colorado Trail” by Marcel Grandjany will close out the first half of the program.

Following the intermission, Hainen’s program takes the harp in some unexpected directions. The second half will open with “Claire de Lune” from Suite Bergamasque, composed by Claude Debussy and arranged by Hainen and her husband, percussionist David DePeters, for harp and vibraphone. Next will be Sting’s “St. Agnes and the Burning Train,” also arranged by DePeters. “Metamorphosis Two,” by Philip Glass, will be followed by a traditional Chinese Folk Song, and as a final showcase of beautiful mastery of the harp, the evening will close with Caroline Lizotte’s “Suite Galactique.”

ABOUT THE MUSICIAN

Hainen has earned an international reputation as one of classical music’s great harp ambassadors. Hailed by the Washington Post for her “unusual presence with silky transparency” and by the New York Times for her “earthy solidarity,” Hainen has thrilled audiences throughout the world with programs showcasing the diversity — and virtuosity — of her modern-day instrument.

As solo harpist with The Philadelphia Orchestra for more than 19 years, she has presented numerous featured performances to captivated audiences and has been praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer for “her ability to blend and color the musical line” and “to find transparency in an almost timeless atmosphere.”

In addition to The Philadelphia Orchestra, she has appeared as a featured soloist with the City of London Sinfonia, Iris Orchestra, Kennedy Center Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonia Nacional de Colombia, Bulgaria National Radio Orchestra, Camerata Ducale in Italy, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Mexico State Symphony, the Vienna Boys Choir and in numerous recitals at Carnegie Hall.

“She is a complete harpist who knows and uses her instrument’s strength and brilliance and strikes its fire,” writes the Miami Herald’s James Roos. “You miss nothing she wants you to hear.”
