On Friday, March 6, the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre is sponsoring a free screening of the classic 1959 film “Hound of the Baskervilles,” starring Peter Cushing, Andre Morell and Christopher Lee.

A fiendish evil lurks beneath the mist-shrouded cliffs of England’s fabled moors. In the form of a hellish hound, it feeds upon the trembling flesh of the heirs of Baskerville Hall. But before this savage beast can sink its teeth into the newest lord of the manor, it must pit its vicious fangs against the searing intellect of the most powerful foe it’s ever encountered — the incomparable Sherlock Holmes.

‘Best of the Sherlocks’

This is an excellent and thrilling film — Newsweek called it “the best of the Sherlocks” — with elements in Hammer House of Horror style based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It’s a genuine, ripping yarn with much suspense, moody intrigue, thrills and detective action, and it packs an exciting deal of surprises, despite being a known story. Cushing plays Holmes as an intelligent, obstinate, broody, pipe-smoking sleuth. Here, Dr. Watson isn’t a botcher, bungler or clumsy partner incarnated by Nigel Bruce, but a cunning and astute pal well represented by Andre Morell.

The movie has a creepy atmosphere, especially when it is developed on the moor where lives the fearful, giant beast. “Hound of the Baskervilles” has spooky and murky cinematography by Jack Asher, and an eerie, creepy musical score by James Bernard. The Hammer House of Horror master, the great Terence Fisher, accurately directs this atmospheric motion picture.

Before the film, Christopher Willard, artistic director of the Backstage Theatre, and the three actors — Chris Boeckx, Cody Lyman and Seth Maisel — from the upcoming Backstage Theatre production of “Hound of the Baskervilles” will compare and contrast the film and the play.

Up next, more ‘Hound’

The theatrical version of “Hound of the Baskervilles,” presented by the Backstage Theatre, begins its run Thursday, March 12, with performance dates through Saturday, April 4.

In the wacky style of “The 39 Steps,” this laugh-a-second send-up of Sherlock Holmes stirs an ancient curse, a spectral hound and a deranged killer into a comic masterpiece alive with mystery, suspense and uproarious fun. Starring three versatile comedic actors playing dozens of roles — with rapid-fire costume changes — as the boys of Baker Street face off against the colossal canine of the moors. This is the last live show in the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre before its remodel.
