Summit Right Brain: Eighth-grader takes role of Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid Jr’

Isabela Imamura, 14, is starring as Ariel in the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre's production of "The Little Mermaid Jr." Adapted from Disney's 2008 Broadway production, the play is part of the Student Theatrical Enrichment Program, opening April 29 at the Riverwalk Center. This is the eighth-graders second time participating in the STEP program, as she played Gertrude in "Seussical Jr," STEP's debut production.

Summit Daily News: What kind of skills has the STEP program given you?

Isabela Imamura: I've learned a lot of acting skills from it. The directors and voice teachers are great people; they've taught me so much. It's amazing.

SDN: What has been your favorite part of the STEP program?

II: My favorite part would be seeing younger kids in it, too. I love how they are becoming interested in theater; it just makes me really happy.

SDN: Do you think you will pursue acting in the future?

Recommended Stories For You

II: Yes, my dream is to be actually on Broadway if I make it that far.

SDN: Do you feel like you can relate to your character?

II: Yeah, she is really adventurous and just out of it sometimes. She's a dreamer, and I'm a big dreamer.

SDN: What is your favorite scene from the play?

II: Probably this number called le possion. One of my good friends is the chef, and it's a great number with all the little chefs, and it's the best.

SDN: What do you think the audience will enjoy most from the play?

II: I think they will enjoy all the numbers. All of the kids have put a lot of effort into it just to make them perfect, so I think the audience will really enjoy it and be entertained.

SDN: How long have you been acting and how did you first get into it?

II: I've been acting ever since I was little, just in Dillon theater, nothing big. My voice teacher told me about the STEP program when it first started last year, and that's how it all started.

SDN: What are your other hobbies besides acting?

II: I play on the U14 Summit hockey team, and I also dance at Alpine Dance Academy.
