If you’re a parent, you’ve probably heard these words uttered by your offspring more times than you’d like to count. After the initial thrill of being out of school wears off, kids start to become bored and experience “brain drain.” From arts and education to adventure and sports, enrich your child’s summer by signing him or her up for one of Summit County’s many camps. Here’s a list to get you started.



Adventure



Breckenridge Mountain Camp

Location: Breckenridge Recreation Center, 880 Airport Road, Breckenridge

Dates: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 3-Aug. 16

Cost: $38 per day for residents or $43 for nonresidents; $10 Breckenridge Mountain Camp membership required; lunch provided for $5 per day (excluding field-trip days)

Open for children ages 5 to 12, this camp offers activities including swimming, climbing, hiking and even jumping on a giant inflatable obstacle course. Additionally, every Tuesday is a field-trip day, with destinations matching each week’s theme, such as “Blast-off into Space” at the Denver Planetarium, “Wild Animal Kingdom” at the Denver Zoo, and “Pike’s Peak or Bust!” and various places throughout Summit County.

Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center Adventures Within Teen Camp

Location: BOEC Old Cabin, Breckenridge

Dates: August 2-4

Cost: $475

This camp is three days of fun in the Rocky Mountains designed for young adults, ages 13 to 17, dealing with multiple sclerosis. Activities will include rafting, rock climbing and ropes course. The camp, new for 2013, is a cooperative effort between the BOEC and the Rocky Mountain MS Center. Scholarships are available for kids from Colorado and Summit County.

Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center Camp Big Tree

Location: BOEC Old Cabin, Breckenridge

Dates: July 7-11

Cost: $700

This is a five-day, four-night overnight camp for boys and girls ages 12 to 16 with sensory integration disorders, learning and/or attention deficits. Through a variety of outdoor adventure activities such as rock climbing, river rafting and camping, students will have the opportunity to practice social skills, teamwork traits and leadership qualities that will transfer into everyday life. Scholarships are available for kids from Colorado and Summit County.

Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center Jr. Adventurer’s Camp

Location: BOEC Old Cabin, Breckenridge

Dates: June 30-July 2

Cost: $475

This three-day course is specially designed for boys and girls ages 8 to 12 with special needs and disabilities. The camp will provide youth the opportunity to discover nature, boost self-esteem through challenging experiences and have fun in a safe, social environment. The 2 ½-day camp includes team-building activities, an adaptive ropes course, nature skills, a campfire and river rafting. All students must be independent with personal care or have care attendant attend with them for a reduced fee. Scholarships are available for kids from Colorado and Summit County.

Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center Wilderness Camp

Location: Flat-water mobile canoe course down Ruby and Horsethief canyons on the Colorado River

Dates: July 15-19

Cost: $750

Wilderness Camp is a five-day, four-night overnight camp for young adults ages 16 to 23 with developmental disabilities. Through outdoor activities designed around established experiential education models, students will have the opportunity to develop social skills, teamwork traits and leadership qualities that will transfer into everyday life. This is an adventure-based course where students will be involved in cooking, cleaning and gear preparation during the course; however, the emphasis will be on having fun in a structured setting, as the activities include canoeing, light hiking and camping. Scholarships are available for kids from Colorado and Summit County.

Breckenridge Ski Resort Summer Day Camp

Location: Breckenridge Ski Resort

Dates: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., half-day and full-day sessions available, June 3-Sept. 2

Cost: $75 for morning or afternoon half-day session; $97 for full day; $375 for a full-day five-pack, which can be used any five days throughout the camp season

The day camp features a curriculum that focuses on science, nature, crafts and more, while teaching kids valuable outdoor skills. Camp is open to children ages 5 to12. Full-day sessions include lunch, and camp is run by CPR- and first aid-certified counselors with a maximum 1-to-10 ratio of counselors to campers. This camp is an official Colorado licensed camp facility.

Explore the ‘thorne (Silverthorne, that is!)

Location: Silverthorne Recreation Center

Dates: 1-4 p.m., June 10-13 and July 29-Aug. 1

Cost: $60 for passholders, $72 for nonpassholders

This new outdoor class for ages 7 to 12 will get you out and about exploring our town by biking, hiking and riding the Summit Stage.

Frisco Adventure Camp

Location: Frisco Adventure Park

Dates: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 3-7, July 8-12, Aug. 5-9

Cost: $205 for Frisco residents and $230 for nonresidents

This program for ages 6 to 12 will increase participants’ knowledge and ability in the bike and skate parks. Our instructors will guide the participants through all of the park features, beginning with the basics and taking them to the intermediate level by the end of the week.

Frisco Fun Club

Location: Frisco Nordic Lodge

Dates: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 3-Aug. 16

The Frisco Fun Club is an exciting and adventurous way for children ages 5 to 12 to spend the summer. Enjoy weeklong, themed activities that offer educational opportunities and activities.

Kidtopia Kids’ Discovery Days

Location: River Run Village Plaza, Keystone

Dates: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesdays, June 18-Aug. 13

Cost: Free

Children 12 and younger can explore the fun at the Kid’s Discovery Days, with a show, bounce house, spin art and two face painters. The entertainer changes every week.

Woodward at Copper Summer Camp

Location: Woodward at Copper, located at Copper Mountain

Dates: Weeklong sessions, June 16-Aug. 1; Grom Week, with special programming for kids ages 8 to 12, is July 28-Aug. 1.

Cost: Prices start at $699, depending on the discipline and week.

This camp helps kids ages 10 and older further their skills while having fun. Several disciplines are offered throughout the summer, including ski, snowboard, digital media, skateboard, slopeside mountain bike and BMX. Woodward offers on-snow parks, as well as the Barn, an indoor training facility featuring trampolines, foam pits and Skatelite jumps.

Cupcakes and Canvases

Location: Under the Gazebo in Lakeside Village, Keystone

Dates: 10 a.m. to noon, June 27, July 11, July 25 and Aug. 8

Cost: $15

This Mommy and Me class for ages 12 and younger is a perfect outlet for your little one’s “inner Picasso.” An art teacher will inspire and guide your kids as they create their masterpieces. The two-hour-long session includes a canvas and art supplies for the children, as well as cupcakes for the “starving” artists.

Lake Dillon Theatre Company Youth Workshops

• Disney’s Heroes and Villains

Are you a good person, or do you have desire for a little evil in your life? Come play with the Lake Dillon Theatre Company and find your inner hero (or villain). This one-week intensive is fun for all ages.

• School House Rock Live

Conjunction junction — what’s your function? This two-week camp is designed with intimate class settings on character, movement and voice, all the while putting together one of the more spectacular shows.

• The Little Mermaid

One of Disney’s greatest musicals, this two-week workshop will not only focus on production but also individual classes on character, movement and voice.

• Teen Intensive

With master classes taught by professional actors and a fully realized theatre production, our students will finish these workshops as much better performers and “theatre folk.”

Little Earth Art Studio Summer Art Camp

Location: Little Earth Art Studio, 1795 Airport Road, Unit A-1, Breckenridge

The Little Earth Art Studio is offering summer art camps for children ages 7 to 14 who wish to enrich their artistic viewpoints. The art theme changes week to week, and the camp will explore unique projects from painting to ceramics. Scale the Summit Chamber Music Camp

Location: Dillon Community Church

Dates: Aug. 5-9

Cost: $300

Led by artistic director Chas Wetherbee, this is a music camp for strings, woodwinds, piano, harp and guitar, with the goal of encouraging creativity, strengthening leadership skills and teaching students how to work within a team. Students will focus on chamber music, improvisation, orchestra and individual skills. Students must have a minimum of one year playing their instrument and/or be able to play the pieces in Suzuki Book 1 or the equivalent.

Scale the Summit Music Exploration

Location: Warren Station, River Run, Keystone

Dates: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 17-20

Cost: $225

This camp lays the foundation for the future enjoyment of music. Students will have the opportunity to play flute, clarinet, bells, snare drum, trumpet, violin and harp. The camp is open to students ages 7 and older, and no prior musical experience is required.

Colorado Learning Connections: Summer Connections

Location: Frisco

Dates: 9 a.m. to noon, Monday-Thursday, starts June 10

Cost: $240 for the first week, $200 for each additional week, $75 for Daily Connections

Summer Connections is a six-week program offered to students in grades one through six for half or full-day options. Participants are free to build their own schedule. The themes for each week are caves, ancient civilizations, native and nomadic dwellings, castle construction, sacred spaces and sustainable communities, with daily learning activities.

Colorado Mountain College Spanish Conversation Camp

Location: Colorado Mountain College Dillon campus

Dates: June 24-28

Cost: $300

Spanish Conversation Camp is a weeklong Spanish-immersion opportunity for students ages 10 to 13. Students will spend the whole day learning and speaking Spanish with native-speaking instructors. Each day will include a variety of fun indoor and outdoor activities, all designed to offer interaction in Spanish. Open to all levels of conversational Spanish ability. Bring your own lunch. Enrollment is limited to 24 students.

Colorado Mountain College Summer Sustainability Institute

Location: Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge campus

Dates: July 15-19

Cost: $350

The Institute is a weeklong, outdoor, hands-on learning adventure for students who will be entering the sixth, seventh or eighth grades in September. Working outside in the CMC community gardens and the outdoor classroom, students will learn about the key concepts of sustainability. Topics include sustainable agriculture, recycling and composting, alternative energies, conservation and community connection. Students must submit a letter of interest describing their desire and learning objectives upon application. Application deadline is June 15.

Colorado Mountain College Summer Technology Institute

Location: Computer lab, Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge campus

Dates: July 22-26

Cost: $495, includes daily breakfast and lunch

The Institute is a weeklong, technology-packed learning adventure for students who will be entering the sixth, seventh or eighth grades in September. Students will learn about the technical, creative and business aspects of technology. Subjects include website development, digital photography, Photoshop, digital video production, e-commerce shopping carts and more. Experienced instructors and professionals at the forefront of their fields teach all subjects. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0, Summit School District average of 4 or better. Summer of Dreams at Keystone Science School

Location: Keystone Science School, Keystone

Summer of Dreams is a chance to celebrate childhood, make new friends and transform from a sparkle of wonder into a beacon of unimaginable possibility. Day Camp, for kids ages 5 to 11, provides hours of nonstop science, adventure and fun each summer weekday. Overnight residential programs offer a variety of options to fit the schedules and lifestyles of busy families and active kids ages 5 to 13. The Keystone Mountain Adventure program is a longer, expedition-based session offered to teens ages 12 to 18. Exploration, hands-on education and leadership development come together for a once-in-a-lifetime Rocky Mountain experience. Sessions range from six days to an extended 13-day adventure.

Kids in the Kitchen

Mountain Top Children’s Museum Summer Day Camp

Location: Village at Breckenridge by Maggie Pond

Dates: 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 3-Aug. 16 (no camp July 4)

Cost: $37 per day or $170 per week

The Mountain Top Children’s Museum offers an 11-week summer program packed with projects, art antics and crazy experiments. Explore nature, create from loose parts, and use your noodle. Each camp week is based on a theme that offers children opportunities to be creative, inquisitive and adventurous. The camp is open to children ages 5 to 10, with a limited-space mentoring program for ages 11 to 14.

Sage Tutoring Summer Enrichment

Location: Breckenridge

• Emagination Computer Architects: Where technology and creativity meet

Dates: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 24-28

Cost: $495, includes microcontroller kit that students take home with them, daily lunch and snacks

Students ages 11 to 17 will learn about the world of open-source computer programming, microcontrollers and circuitry and complete a series of guided projects and collaborate with their peers to program a can of silly string to shoot at their parents. Students will leave with the critical thinking skills needed to build self-designed projects on their own.

• To the Atom and Beyond: Making science accessible

Dates: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 8-12

Cost: $395, includes daily lunch and snacks

This is a weeklong camp for ages 11 to 17 filled with hands-on activities that make complex concepts easy to grasp. This summer’s theme is physics: Students will visualize sound through fire, learn about chemistry by making their own soda flavors, use computer modeling to track the trajectory of a home-made rocket and more.

• Nature Writers: A transcendental approach to writing

Dates: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 15-19

Cost: $595, includes full-day standup paddleboarding adventure with Gore Range Expeditions, daily lunch and snacks

This camp is for young adults, ages 11 to 17, who want to enhance their love of literature and writing through nature. Students will analyze the works of great authors and artists in order to find their voices. We’ll explore the outdoors and write about the world around us. Students will attend a standup paddleboarding trip on the Upper Colorado River and compose a narrative about their experience.

• Active Brains and Bodies: A cross-disciplinary camp for elementary students

Dates: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 8-12

Cost: $395, includes daily lunch and snacks

Learning and movement are incorporated into this indoor/outdoor camp for ages 5 to 10. Students will engage in literary activities and hands-on science experiments like rocket building and making ice cream in a bag. Students will get their bodies moving with fun outdoor games and scavenger hunts.

• Make a Splash: ACT/college essay combination course

Dates: 1-3 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 19-Sept. 18; diagnostic exam 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 17

Cost: $595, includes full-length, proctored ACT diagnostic exam and score report and all materials

Staff will guide students ages 15 to 17 through the ACT, helping them to build the confidence they need to succeed on test day. Additionally, students will learn how to write a polished essay that showcases the unique and interesting individuals that they are.

Advanced Beginner Tennis Camp

Dates: 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. June 3-7; 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. June 24-28; 10-11 a.m. July 8-12; 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. July 29-Aug. 2

Cost: $40 for passholders; $48 for nonpassholders

Players ages 8 to 12 review and develop technique for forehand, backhand, serve, volley and overhead smashes. Tennis scoring and etiquette are also taught. Competitive and noncompetitive games are played daily.

Beginner Tennis Camp

Location: Rainbow Park Tennis Courts, Silverthorne

Dates: 10:30-11:30 a.m. June 3-7; 10-11 a.m. June 24-28; 9-10 a.m. July 8-12; 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. July 29-Aug. 2

Cost: $40 for passholders; $48 for nonpassholders

Players ages 7 to 9 learn proper technique for forehand, backhand, serve and volley. Coaches will assist players through interactive drills and games.

Dance Camp

Location: Silverthorne Recreation Center

Dates: 2-4 p.m., June 17-20 and July 15-18

Cost: $80 for passholders; $96 for nonpassholders

Ages 8 to 12 have fun with dance in a new fun and funky way. This class will also include using Rainbow Park for “stretch in the grass,” the track for “across the track” and the pool for “water ballet.”

Dillon Junior Sailing

Location: Dillon

Dates: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, 10 weeklong sessions available, June 10-Aug. 23

Cost: $325 for one week, $600 for two weeks or $850 for three weeks if registered before May 31; prices increase after that

Beginner, intermediate and advanced sailors from age 10 to 18 can find themselves out on the lake this summer. Beginners will primarily sail Pico sailboats and learn boat parts, rigging, knots, basic boat handling, boat safety, terminology, docking and basic capsize recovery. Intermediate sailors will complete drills and games to improve their skills, focusing on tacking, jibing, sail trim, harder knots, different capsize recovery methods and understanding all points-of-sail. In the advanced sailing program, sailors will begin to learn the basic racing rules, basic tactics, race rigging, how to recognize and use weather and wind conditions and how to make the boats sail faster.

Frisco Professional Baseball Camp

Dates: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 17-21

Cost: $210

Daily instruction from the coaches will include hitting techniques, position fielding, base running, sliding, pitching and throwing, proper warm-up and rules of the game. Open to children ages 8 to 16.

Girls on the Run Camp

Location: Frisco Adventure Park

Dates: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 5-9

Cost: $215

Girls on the Run is a transformational learning program for girls in third through eighth grades. It teaches life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The girls will spend the week on the trails at the Frisco Peninsula, teambuilding at the Frisco Adventure Park, local field trips and more.

Keystone Tennis Club Drop-In Junior Clinics

Location: Across Highway 6 from Keystone Lodge, 22007 Tennis Club Road

Dates: 10-11 a.m. (ages 5-10) and 11 a.m. to noon (ages 11-16) Tuesdays; 10-11 a.m. (ages 5-10) and 11 a.m. to noon (ages 11-16) Thursdays

Children ages 4 to 6 learn to love tennis through fun and games with tennis racquets and tennis balls. Hand-eye coordination and the concept of teamwork are also developed.

Skateboard Camp

Location: Silverthorne Skate Park

Silverthorne Skateboard camps can help children ages 5 to 14 master balancing against the laws of gravity, play with new skills and tricks and gain confidence hanging in the park.
