The Breckenridge Music Festival will present a special concert at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge today in a program of music featuring the brass players of the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra. Included in the evening’s entertainment will be arrangements of pieces by Sondheim, Gershwin, Debussy, Bach and many more.

Always a favorite with summer festival audiences, the brass players of the BMF match great music with a great deal of fun and information for an evening of musical entertainment. A highlight of this concert will be an all-brass arrangement of one of George Gershwin’s most familiar works, “Porgy and Bess,” which will take listeners back to Catfish Lane with such standards as “Summertime” and “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’.”

Brass ensembles have a long and distinguished history, with both the British and German brass band traditions creating enthusiastic followings in the United States and their countries of origin. A tradition of composing for brass ensemble, and of creating transcriptions of works originally for other instrumentation, has built a repertoire encompassing music from the Renaissance period through the most contemporary era, including popular, sacred and art music of all styles. Works from the concert program include Bach’s “Fantasia in C Major,” Haydn’s “March for the Prince of Wales,” Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” and more.

Influenced, perhaps, by the traditional brass players’ characteristic irreverence for protocol and tendency to quirky senses of humor, the Breckenridge Music Festival’s annual brass concert features the entertaining blend of excellent music and enjoyable personalities, which festival audiences have come to expect.
