The third decade of Genuine Jazz & Wine begins Friday, Aug. 22, at Copper Mountain, bringing together jazz enthusiasts and wine lovers for a weekend of soulful sounds and smooth tastes.

“There are a lot of guests who come every single year,” said Mary Lou Li Puma, general manager of the conference center at Copper Mountain. “People come on Friday and leave Sunday afternoon, and they just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and intimate setting of the wine tastings and entertainment.”

Wine tastings, to be held throughout the weekend, include selections from Ruffino, Dreaming Tree Wines and Ravenswood Winery, as well as known varietals such as Diseno malbec and Robert Mondavi pinot noir, among others.

Featured jazz headliners include Peter White, Euge Groove, Jonathan Butler, Rick Braun, Bobby Lyle, Joey Sommerville and Joan Osborne.

“This year, for the 30th annual, we’ve made an effort to have a complete lineup of national acts,” said Mike O’Brien, with Peak Performances. “Normally, we have four national headliners, and this year, we have seven. We are also doing an all-star jam on Saturday night, when they will all be on stage together.”

Osborne, an American singer-songwriter-guitarist known for her hit “What if God Was One of Us,” will be playing a free showcase show at Burning Stones Plaza on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

“We’ve got a new album that came out in April called ‘Love and Hate,’” Osborne said in a recent phone interview. “It is a record that I have worked on for a long, long time, and it’s really satisfying that it is out in the world.”

Osborne and her band will be playing songs from the new album, she said, as well as fan favorites from other records.

“It’s my seventh record now, so we have an awful lot of material to draw from,” she said, “and we tend to play a handful of requests.”

WINE MEETS MUSIC

Li Puma said samples of Ruffino prosecco will be available during Osborne’s set on Saturday, along with cheese and crackers and a special peach brandy prosecco cocktail.

Pairing smooth music with smooth wine seems like an obvious choice, according to Osborne.

“When you open a nice bottle of wine, you want to hear some great music with it, or when you are listening to some great music outdoors, you want to have a nice bottle of wine,” she said. “It’s not rocket science — I think they are pretty obvious companions.”

The festival caters to lounging as well as dancing, and it seems that there will be plenty of opportunity for both throughout the weekend.

“Part of it will be music that you will want to sit and chill to, and hopefully we’ll get people up dancing a little bit, as well, because we have a lot of tunes that are perfect for that,” Osborne said of her Saturday set. “I think it’s going to be a beautiful day and a beautiful setting, so what’s not to love.”

Save some room for the Genuine Jazz & Wine Sunday brunch, a New Orleans-inspired buffet from 10 a.m. to noon. The brunch cost is $29.95 per person, which includes a complimentary Bloody Mary or sangria breakfast cocktail.

Music will be played throughout brunch and into the afternoon. Li Puma said dining reservations are recommended.
