A Copper Mountain spring tradition continues with Sunsation over two back-to-back weekends, Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13, and Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20, with pond skimming, live music, a 5K and more.
The first weekend of Sunsation features the third-annual Red Bull Slopesoakers — a hybrid rail jam and pond skim — on Saturday, April 12. Back by popular demand, this year's course is expected to be bigger and better than ever, and prizes include $500 cash and 2014-15 Copper Mountain season passes. Registration is available online at http://www.coppercolorado.com.
Following the Slopesoakers awards in Burning Stones Plaza, there will be live music from The Old '97s, an alternative country band from Dallas, Texas, that takes rootsy, country-influenced songwriting and adds punk-rock energy. The band is recognized as a pioneer of the alt-country movement from the late '90s, along with bands such as Uncle Tupelo, Drive-By Truckers, Whiskeytown and The Bottle Rockets.
Guys and gals show off their best beachwear in the infamous Eenie Weenie Bikini Contest on Sunday, April 13. Register the day of the event in Burning Stones Plaza; the entry fee is $25 and benefits local charity. Contestants make their way down from the base of the Main Vein Halfpipe via skis or snowboard and give their best show to a panel of judges, who rate them on creativity and flair. There's a cash prize of $350 each for the top male and female, plus Copper Mountain 4-Packs and Copper Cash for second and third place. The event will be followed by live music from the Shaley Scott Band and Leadville Cherokee in Burning Stones Plaza.
From Fort Collins, Shaley Scott's original style is the perfect blend of pop music fundamentals and 21st century trends. A mix of piano and guitar paints a melodic picture that is unique, yet recognizable, and deep, yet completely relatable. It's piano for the soul. Leadville Cherokee will take the stage following the Shaley Scott Band's set. An alternative rock band from Leadville, their style incorporates a variety of musical genres and tones that range from rock, reggae, bluegrass and jam to folk, funk, hip-hop, alternative and blues.
The second weekend of Sunsation, Copper's closing weekend, kicks off with The Color Run's first 5-kilometer race on snow on Saturday, April 19. The course stretches across the resort and features color "throws" at each mile, ensuring all runners are colorful from head to toe. Register now for the happiest 5K on the planet, The Color Run, at http://bit.ly/TCRCopper. Use the discount code COPPERMTN for a special deal for Copper Mountain fans.
The race will be followed by music from Denver-based That Eighties Band and local favorites Funky Johnson. That Eighties Band is one of the most popular '80s tribute bands in America, having performed at more than 1,200 concerts, corporate events and weddings.
Funky Johnson is a funk outfit with tasty vocals, virtuosic guitar grooves, solid bass and tight drum beats, playing originals and covers ranging from Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire and James Brown to Aretha Franklin, Prince, The Funky Meters and many more.
On Closing Day, Sunday, April 20, join Copper for the World's Largest Easter Egg Hunt, complete with 50,000 eggs. Seven- to 11-year-olds meet in Center Village at 10 a.m., ages 6 and younger at the climbing wall at 11 a.m., and the on-mountain hunt starts at noon.
