The Frisco Historic Park & Museum, as well as the Summit Historical Society, are hosting a few events throughout March to celebrate the strong women who helped shape Summit County’s history. Although men significantly outnumbered women in Summit’s early days, there are still plenty of courageous women who were important to our area’s development — from the women of the mining days, to those who first helped settle Bill’s Ranch in Frisco, to women like Edna Dercum who helped shape the ski industry. It’s hard for me to even imagine the types of hardships they went through to survive in a rugged mountain environment back then, but there are so many stories of brave women who not only survived, but also built a life for themselves and their families here, creating successful businesses and becoming important members of the community. Summit County has such an intriguing history, and I was barely able to brush the surface of it all in the article on Women’s History Month.

First up for events, the Summit Historical Society will host an afternoon with New York Times best-selling author Sandra Dallas on Saturday, March 12, at the Dillon Community Church at 2 p.m. The author lived in Breckenridge for many years, and her novels are set largely in Colorado. For this event, Dallas will focus the presentation on three of her books set in the Summit County area, “The Last Midwife,” “Prayers for Sale” and “White as Snow.” On Saturday, March 19, the Frisco Historic Park & Museum will host a walking tour through Bill’s Ranch, focusing on the women who helped settle the area.
