The Lake Dillon Theatre Company recently announced its 2015 theater season, which includes a Tony Award-winning “Best Musical,” a critically acclaimed regional premiere and much more. LDTC is Colorado’s most intimate professional theater, bringing a 2015 season of diverse, exciting productions to Summit County’s local and visiting audiences.

“All of us at the Lake Dillon Theatre Company are excited to present our 2015 season,” said Christopher Alleman, LDTC producing artistic director. “We are bringing some familiar characters to Summit County’s audiences but in new stories and told in exciting new ways. From Sigmund Freud to Sherlock Holmes, we feel the characters in our productions will not only entertain our audiences but also allow them to rediscover them in ways they have never seen before.”

‘Freud’s Last Session’

Opening in March 2015 is the regional premiere of Mark St. Germain’s riveting drama “Freud’s Last Session,” directed by Wendy Moore (LDTC’s “Scapin,” “The Sunshine Boys”) and featuring Bob Moore (LDTC’s “Grace,” “Scapin”) and Lake Dillon Theatre Company executive director Joshua Blanchard (“Grace,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman”).

On a September morning in London in 1939, 83-year-old Dr. Sigmund Freud sits anxiously among a lifetime of collected books and artifacts, suffering from advanced oral cancer and waiting by the radio for news of Britain’s entering into World War II. With disaster in the air, he welcomes the little-known author and Oxford professor C. S. Lewis.

The two men embark on an unexpected intellectual journey together, as the play soon centers on the opposing philosophies between a legendary psychoanalyst and a then unknown Christian existentialist. And while the two clash about love, sex, the existence of God and the meaning of life, just weeks before Freud takes his own life, they surprisingly find commonalities based on mutual respect, a shared sense of wit and an overall belief in human dignity.

“Freud’s Last Session” is a deeply touching play filled with lively discourse and surprising humor that explores the minds, hearts and souls of two brilliant thinkers addressing the greatest questions of all time.

‘Gutenberg! The Musical!’

Opening June 2015 is the Drama Desk-nominated musical “Gutenberg! The Musical!” written by Scott Brown and Anthony King. Directed by Blanchard (“Big River,” “Orphans”), “Gutenberg! The Musical!” will feature LDTC production manager Ben Whitmore (“Don’t Dress for Dinner,” “Boeing, Boeing”) and Kevin Alan (LDTC’s “Scapin,” “The 39 Steps”).

In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights performs a backer’s audition for their new project, a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract and fulfill their ill-advised dreams.

With a hilarious and original score hailed as a “smashing success” by the New York Times, “Gutenberg! The Musical!” is a hilarious, family-friendly show within a show that takes a refreshing look back at a historic inventor and leaves audiences rolling with laughter.

‘La Cage Aux Folles’

Opening July 2015 is the 11-time Tony-winning “Best Musical” “La Cage Aux Folles,” by the legendary team of Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein, directed by Alleman (“Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “Hair!”).

After 20 years of bliss, partners Georges and Albin get a lesson in family dynamics when Georges’ now grown son announces his unexpected engagement to the daughter of a conservative, bigoted politician. Further complicating the situation is the “family business,” the drag nightclub in St. Tropez managed by Georges, where Albin is the star performer “Zaza.”

At the request of his love-struck son, Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as a conservative art collector when he meets the family of his son’s bride-to-be. Albin, on the other perfectly manicured hand, refuses to pretend to be anything other than himself, unexpectedly infusing his flair for mascara and diamonds into the family affair, leading to an evening of mayhem, madness and total fun.

Hailed as “a family show” and “a fast-stepping extravaganza” by the New York Daily News, this classic, groundbreaking musical about family and friendship is at once both humorous and heartwarming, set amidst all the glitter and feathers of the fabulous nightclub La Cage Aux Folles.

‘Cloak & Dagger’

Opening August 2015 is the new hilarious whodunit musical by Ed Dixon, “Cloak & Dagger, or the Case of the Golden Venus.”

Third-rate detective Nick Cutter is down on his luck when a beautiful blonde bombshell tosses a very intriguing case (and herself) into his lap. For the next 90 minutes, the unassuming detective races through every New York neighborhood imaginable in this zany, mile-a-minute musical caper. With four actors playing nearly 20 roles, “Cloak & Dagger, or the Case of the Golden Venus”celebrates the erstwhile mystery genre of the film noir ’50s with clever wit, amazing speed and an original score of toe-tapping songs.

Hailed as “the perfect way to spend a summer’s evening in the theater” by Maryland Theatre Guide, “Cloak & Dagger, or the Case of the Golden Venus” is the perfect family musical for any fan of mystery, humor or just a good time.

‘Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure’

Opening November 2015 is “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure,” adapted by Colorado playwright Steven Dietz and based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Directed by Alleman, this intriguing production explores the mystery and suspense of the world’s most famous super sleuth.

Sherlock Holmes has seemingly reached the end of his remarkable career when a case presents itself that is too tempting to ignore. The king of Bohemia is about to be blackmailed by a notorious photograph, and the woman at the heart of this crime is famous opera singer Irene Adler.

With his trusted companion Doctor Watson at his side, Sherlock Holmes pursues first the case and then the affections of Miss Adler and, in doing so, marches right into the lair of his longtime adversary and malevolent genius of crime Professor Moriarty.

In this spirited, fast-moving and thoroughly theatrical adaptation, Dietz presents Holmes at the height of his powers, surrounded by all the elements that fans of his exploits have come to expect: danger, intrigue, wit, humor and surprise.

Winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play, “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure” is a gleeful whodunit that’s both deeply original and an expert homage to all things “Holmesian.”

“Our 2015 theater season presents five diverse, high-quality and exciting productions for the guests and residents of our community,” Alleman said. “As part of our signature style, we promise to provide something for everyone in our intimate theater venue.”
