The National Repertory Orchestra, conducted by Carl Topilow, will perform “Hollywood Classics,” featuring the film music of John Williams, Marvin Hamlisch and Henry Mancini, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Riverwalk Center.

The program will feature music from “Star Trek,” “Jurassic Park,” “Les Miserables” and many more favorite film scores. Not to forget the little ones, the concert also will feature “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from “The Little Mermaid.”

“Some of the best orchestral music composed in the last 50 years has come from Hollywood,” said Douglas Adams, CEO of the National Repertory Orchestra. “In 1908, Camille Saint-Saens wrote the score for Henri Lavedan’s film ‘The Assassination of the Duke of Guise.’ Copland, Prokofiev and Shostakovich also wrote for the screen.”

These famous classical composers paved the way for some of the most popular Hollywood composers of recent years, including Williams and the late Hamlisch, both Academy Award winners.

“John Williams’ music speaks for itself,” Topilow said. “Williams is a great melodist, and his music has a great sense of drama. The thing that is most incredible to me about John Williams is the fact that he can take music from so many different genres. Whether it’s adventure, extremely serious like ‘Schindler’s List’ or comic like ‘Home Alone,’ he’s really quite amazing in his ability to do whatever is necessary.

“If it’s ‘Memoirs of a Geisha,’ it has a Japanese flavor. If it’s ‘Schindler’s List,’ it has sort of a strange Jewish or Yiddish flavor to it. He always finds a way to make it work. It’s astounding stuff! Of course, there are all of the great fanfares, and we don’t want to leave out ‘Harry Potter.’”

This concert is sponsored by Allure Medical Aesthetics & Laser Center and Downstairs at Eric’s. For ticket information and purchase, call the Riverwalk Center Box Office at (970) 547-3100 or visit the National Repertory Orchestra website at http://www.nromusic.com.
