Other options for road-tripping

Daily News staff reports
The Explore Historic Leadville Weekend, Sept. 20-22, will include a guided tour of Hayden Ranch. Located 8.5 miles south of Leadville, this scenic ranch is a Colorado Mountain College historic preservation project. Participants will learn the stories of the buildings and corralsand how the ranch's hay fed the animals that made mining at Climax possible and how its water power was harnessed to build most of the furniture for the town.

If your car creaks and groans as it creeps over the mountain passes, and Palisade seems too far out of your reach, try one of these events the next two weekends that are a little closer to home.

Crawl for your caffeine

Celebrating its two-year anniversary, Caffeine Crawl is coming to the Mile High City on Saturday. Specialty coffee and tea shops across the metro area will be welcoming caffeinated Crawlers with unique presentations and free sample beverages.

The event will begin at Corvus Coffee Roasters’ new space; Allegro Coffee will be the primary sponsor for the event. Each of the 10 participating shops starts the caffeinated fun with a unique educational presentation and samples for ticket holders. Crawl attendees will receive an event packet full of schwag, a program and an automatic entry into the event raffle for charity.

Other shops participating in the Crawl include: Aviano Coffee, Black Eye Coffee, Commonwealth Coffee Roasters, The Denver Bicycle Cafe, Fluid Coffee Bar, The Market at Larimer Square, Metropolis Coffee, Novo Coffee and Rooster and Moon Coffee Pub. This combination of shops will create a wide array of cutting-edge brewing methods, roast profiles and education on the industry.

Explore Leadville

Leadville has played an important role in Colorado’s history since 1860, when miners discovered gold south of town. History buffs interested in Leadville’s past can dive straight into its depths during Explore Historic Leadville weekend, Sept. 20-22.

The festivities commence on the afternoon of Sept. 20, with a welcome from local officials, followed by tours of the Colorado Mountain College campus and historic Hayden Ranch. The final activity of the day is a visit to the Old Stage Road alongside the Arkansas River, with stops at several interpretive signs detailing the route’s history.

Sept. 21 begins with a tour of Leadville’s historic mining district, followed by a tour and picnic lunch at the National Hall of Fame and Mining Museum. The afternoon includes three additional tours: The House with the Eye Museum, a 19th-century house known for its distinctive window; the Healy House Museum and Dexter Cabin, home of Colorado’s first millionaire; and The Delaware Hotel, an elegant Victorian hotel built in 1886. The evening concludes with dinner and a performance by the “Madams of Central Colorado” at The Delaware Hotel.

The final day of the event is Sept. 22, highlighted by a tour of the Hopemore Mine, in which participants descend a 600-foot vertical shaft to explore an authentic, hard-rock mine. Afterwards, rockhounding expert Joe Nachtrieb will be on hand to assist in the search for semi-precious gemstones in the mining district, with grab-and-go lunches available. The final event is a tour of the Evergreen Cemetery, burial site of “Texas Jack” Omohundro, an Old West actor and cowboy.
