Summit Concert Band to perform Mid-Winter Concert

Mid-Winter Concert

Date: Thursday, Feb. 20

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Lord of the Mountains Church, 56 US Hwy. 6, Dillon

Cost: Free

The Summit Concert Band will once again take to the stage to perform its Mid-Winter Concert under the direction of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Beth Steele. The performance will take place Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Dillon.

The concert will feature a variety of music, including “The Olympics: A Centennial Celebration,” by John Williams and Leo Arnaud; “Entr’acte” and “Toreador’s Song,” from the opera “Carmen”; excerpts from the musical “Chicago”; and “American Riversongs,” by Pierre La Plante. In a tribute to their loved ones, the band members will perform “I Love My Love,” by Gustav Holst, and finish off the concert with the song “Air for Band” and a couple of popular marches by Goldman and Sousa.

“This concert, especially, shows the versatility and ageless qualities of the Summit Concert Band,” said founder and tenor saxophonist Sandy Cleveland. “Not only are we playing the piece ‘Air for Band’ that our lead trombonist, Verne Hoogheem, conducted in 1956, the year it was released, but we’re featuring Ryan Snell, an eighth-grader at Summit Middle School, on the Olympics tribute. We’re very excited about this program.”

As the band concludes this year’s sponsorship drive with this concert, several items will be for sale at a silent auction before the concert and during intermission. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the concert.

The Summit Concert Band is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1982 to provide music for Summit County and surrounding areas. The band is open to players of all ages and abilities and meets most Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Summit High School band room. Please check the website for schedule changes.
