There’s something special about a Sunday afternoon at the Ski Tip Lodge in Keystone. On Sunday, Feb. 1, après ski at the cozy mountain chalet was highlighted during Savor the Slopes, a three-week culinary festival in Keystone.

In-house sommelier Megan Morgan was an informative and gracious host to sets of couples who sat around the fireplace, enjoying four rounds of wine courses for the “Tends in Winemaking” tasting event, held from 4 to 5 p.m.

She shared trends such as “to-go” wine and wine cocktails, pouring the Back Alley Moscato from The Infinite Monkey Theorem out of Denver (it comes in a portable, small can) and the Mionetto “IL Spr!z” Aperol and wine cocktail from Italy.

Morgan then spoke to the emerging trend, and shared pours, of organic, sustainable and biodynamic wines. For the next course, she included information and tastes from areas that have shifted their focus of bulk wine making into the craft of producing fine wine.

To close, she highlighted a special wine tool, called The Coravin, which allows connoisseurs to open a nice bottle — like the Montes “Purple Angel” Carmenere that she poured as a finale — and to keep it away from oxygen so that it lasts longer after being uncorked.

We enjoyed our wine tastings with an order of a not-so-classic food pairing. The Ski Tip Lodge’s chicken and waffles is one of its signature items, and although it wasn’t a perfect match to all the wines, it was an ideal eat as we sank in to this ideal après space.

INFUSION STATION

A few more Savor the Slopes tastings are coming up this week to close out the event series in Keystone.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, the Ski Tip Lodge will feature its handcrafted cocktails created from infused liquors using seasonal ingredients.

Those who attend this tasting will learn how the lodge creates a Tamarind Martini, with tamarind orange-infused vodka and a sweet chili rim.

“This is one of many signature seasonal infusions that the Ski Tip Lodge features year-round,” said Russell Carlton, senior communications director at Keystone, “all in the quaint and rustic setting of the Ski Tip Lodge, once the home of Keystone’s founders, Max and Edna Dercum.”

“Savor the Slopes is the perfect way to put on display why these restaurants play such an integral role in the Keystone experience,” said Staphane Ohayon, Keystone hospitality food and beverage director. “Whether it’s a guest’s first time visiting these restaurants or they are seasoned regulars, they will appreciate the chance to sample some of Keystone’s finest food and drink options.”
