Summit Tigers hockey closes season with 6-1 over Chatfield

The Summit Tiger hockey team ended their season on a high note Friday with a 6-1 win at home over Chatfield.

“It was a good win,” head coach Bobby Dore said. “They were doing what they were supposed to do and it worked out well.”

The Tigers held onto a two-goal lead through the first two periods courtesy of goals by Summit’s Charley Peoples and Jack Nevicosi.

The team came on strong in the third period with four additional goals.

“It just started clicking for us in the third,” junior center George Kasch said of the team’s effort.

Nevicosi completed a hat trick contributing two more goals, along with a goal by George Kaminis. Summit’s Elle Dice recorded her first career goal to seal the victory late in the period. The lone Chatfield goal came after Dice’s goal, 11 minutes into the final period.

It was a strong performance start to finish, Dore said of his team’s effort. “They took the hits to make the plays.”

While the team finished the season 4-15, they went 3-2 in their final five games.

“We started having fun and started to win games,” Kasch said, explaining that the team started to jell after the slow start. “It’s definitely a great way to end the season. It gives us a little momentum going into next season.”

Dore said all season that it was a rebuilding year, and with a young team going forward he’s looking forward to next year.

“I think next year it’s going to be a positive thing,” he said, regarding the team’s strong finish. “We’re only losing one kid.”

For Dore — in his first year as the team’s head coach — it was also a chance to grow with his players in his new role.

“It was a good learning experience, being a first year guy you expect to make some mistakes.”

He’s already set his sights on next year and making the appropriate corrections.
