Mathews: One man’s liberty is another man’s tyranny

Oxford Dictionary’s definition of Liberty: “The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views.”

It seems Guy Pacot is a little perturbed by recent actions of democratically elected officials concerning new gun laws, drilling and eminent domain. Strange how life can just put you in someone else’s shoes. You now can sympathize with that 17-year-old girl who needs an abortion while living under oppressive conservatism. Or that jobless worker who still can’t find employment and relies on government assistance that is being ripped away. Or maybe a Colorado student who can’t go to school or the movies and not be shot numerous times by a maniac who bought a gun without a background check from his buddy. Or possibly that 30-something who can’t afford health care. The veteran who receives no assistance from Veterans Affairs being it has been defunded by the Republicans in Congress. The Grand Junction resident who can’t drink water from a well without ingesting 400-plus carcinogens from fracking chemicals.

Concerning the Barrie property I would suspect that once people inform themselves about how the Barries took their “liberty” in modifying the structure against federal and county laws and blocked access to 2 million acres of public land, maybe they won’t feel the Barries’ “liberty” was infringed upon.

Strange how one person’s “liberty” can be another’s tyranny.

Ain’t life grand?
