Summit County public safety exercise includes mock wildfire drill

The Summit County Office of Emergency Management, Summit County CSU Extension Office, Red White and Blue Fire Rescue and the town of Breckenridge are hosting a community discussion from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, regarding a planned wildfire preparedness exercise scheduled for the end of the month.

The discussion will take place in council chambers at Breckenridge Town Hall, 150 Ski Hill Road.

Numerous agencies will participate in a full-scale emergency preparedness and response exercise scheduled for Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31. The drill includes a mock wildfire scenario, in which a blaze is ignited in the Upper Blue River Valley and is being wind-driven toward Breckenridge. County residents can expect to receive test emergency messaging through SCAlert during the exercise.

Thursday night’s discussion will provide information about the exercise, which includes a Wildfire Preparedness & Education Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 31, at Summit High School.

Summit residents are encouraged to participate in the exercise and the preparedness fair, and to develop and practice their own emergency-preparedness plan.

Due to construction at Breckenridge Town Hall, those planning to attend Thursday’s meeting are being asked to park in the back and use the rear entrance.
