Town of Frisco officials announced last week the 38th annual Run the Rockies scheduled for this weekend will take place as planned even if the course needs to be modified slightly due to flooding.
The 10k and half marathon races both are scheduled to take place Saturday, June 7. Touted for being a fast downhill course, the races begin at Copper Mountain and end on Frisco Main Street by way of the Summit County Recreational Path through Ten Mile Canyon.
However, due to runoff water covering the recreational path near Copper Mountain, the start may be moved to Officer’s Gulch. Run the Rockies officials said any course modifications would be made the day of the race.
“The recreational path is in the process of being cleared of avalanche debris, so this race will likely be the first time this summer that many folks get to see the beauty of the Ten Mile Canyon from the path,” said Linsey Kach, Recreation Programs manager for the town of Frisco. “I am a runner myself, so I really appreciate a great course, which is largely downhill and eases you into the summer running season with mind-occupying views.”
A gun start for the half marathon is scheduled for 8 a.m. race day, with runners participating in the 10k scheduled to go off at 8:30 a.m.
Runners must take a shuttle bus from Frisco Town Hall, 1 West Main Street, to the race start, as there will not be racer parking available at Copper Mountain. The shuttle will begin running at 6:30 a.m. and continue until 8 a.m. Half marathon runners are advised to load the shuttle by 7:30 a.m. in order to make it for the 8 a.m. start. There will be no shuttle transportation after the race.
The recreational path will be open to the public the day of the race, but other users should expect heavier than usual foot traffic between Copper Mountain and Summit High School. Visit www.runtherockies.com to view a course map.
Prior to race day, the Backcountry Brewery, 720 Main St. in Frisco, is hosting from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, a spaghetti dinner for Run the Rockies participants and their families. The buffet-style dinner is $11 for adults and $7 for children. Reservations are not required, but guests must mention that they are racers in order to participate in the pasta dinner.
A post-race party will take place on the lawn of the Frisco Historic Park, located at the finish line in the heart of Frisco on Main Street. All racers will be treated to pizza from Peppino’s Pizza and Subs. Racers of legal drinking age also will receive a beer from the Backcountry Brewery, as well as various giveaways.
Registration is available until Thursday, June 5, online at www.runtherockies.com. Pre-registration is $60 for the half marathon and $40 for the 10k. Day-of registration fees are $65 for the half marathon and $45 for the 10k. Youth 17 and under will receive a $10 discount on all race fees.
Race packet and bib pick-up will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Wilderness Sports, 400 Main St. in Frisco. Day-of packet and bib pick up will be available from 6 to 8 a.m. at Frisco Town Hall.
