Breckenridge Boy Scout earns Eagle Scout designation

Brian Acosta of Breckenridge received his Eagle Scout designation at a Court of Honor conducted at Carter Park on June 16. Acosta’s parents, Steve and Julie Acosta, friends and troop leaders attended the celebration.

“My whole life I’ve looked up to Eagle Scouts as extraordinary role models, so to be recognized as that type of an example is a wonderful feeling,” Acosta said.

Acosta, 15, a junior at Summit High School, is a member of Troop 187 of the Western Colorado Council of the Boy Scouts of America led by Lori Kaczka, troop committee chairwoman, and Art Albin, scoutmaster. During his scouting career, Acosta served in many troop leadership roles including bugler, webmaster, patrol leader, scribe, historian and assistant senior patrol leader. Brian’s scouting experiences thus far have taken him on several high adventure trips, including trekking at Philmont Scout Ranch, bike-packing in Utah and South Dakota and canoeing the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota.

Brian’s Eagle Scout project was to build semi-permanent carnival games for local a youth organization. Summit County Youth will use the games in its annual elementary school Halloween Funhouse.

In addition to scouting, Acosta is a member of Summit High School’s lacrosse, mountain bike, speech and debate, and Culinary STAR teams, as well as a Gold Honor Roll student. The Culinary STAR Team took first place at its state conference and will compete at the FCCLA national conference.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating ideals of service and leadership, including organizing and leading an extensive service project.
