This summer, the town of Silverthorne is taking a closer look at a specific aspect of its recreation portfolio: the outdoors — parks, open space and trails.
Existing gems include Rainbow Park, the Blue River Trail and connections to the White River National Forest and Eagles Nest Wilderness. But there’s more potential in the growing community, which is why the town council approved an update to the town’s 12-year-old Parks, Open Space and Trails (POST) Master Plan.
The new POST Master Plan will set priorities and make recommendations for the next 10 years based on community input. Starting this week, residents will have the opportunity to tell the town how they envision the future of Silverthorne’s outdoors.
SE Group, a Frisco-based consulting firm specializing in the planning, design and development of mountain communities, was selected to complete the POST Master Plan update. The firm has proven success in public outreach and working with mountain resort areas such as Summit County. Already, SE Group has spoken firsthand with more than 35 individuals, homeowner association representatives and user groups who represent special interests in Silverthorne’s outdoors.
Collecting public input
Next on the to-do list is collecting data from those who live and play in these places. SE Group is offering several opportunities to provide input over the next month, and everyone is encouraged to participate.
On Thursday, June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rainbow Park, the annual Summer Evening of Family Fun will be held. This is a free community event that includes a cookout, climbing wall, bounce house, tumble bubbles and more. SE Group will have a booth at the event and will collect information from adults and youths, with special treats for the younger participants. Stop by and see them and share your ideas. If it rains, the open house will be moved indoors to the Silverthorne Recreation Center.
Also this week, a statistically valid survey will be sent to a random sampling of 1,700 area residents. If your household receives a survey, please take time to complete it. The survey results are a key component of SE Group’s research. However, many households will not receive a mailed survey, so an online version will be available for anyone to complete at http://survey.rrcresearch.com/s3/silverthorne-parks. The link will be available from Thursday, June 26, to Friday, July 11. For extra motivation, you can enter to win a $50 Target gift card for participating in the survey.
Second public open house
SE Group will compile the information collected through the surveys and pair it with its professional expertise and experience to present initial findings and draft recommendations at a second public open house, which will be held on Monday, July 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Silverthorne Pavilion.
“The community workshop will be a chance for everyone to tell us if we are on the right track,” said Melissa Sherburne, SE Group community planner. “We look forward to getting the feedback; it’s essential in helping us create final recommendations that best serve the whole community.”
The town is enthusiastic about the process and believes outdoor amenities are an important part of Silverthorne’s fabric.
“These amenities make our community stronger,” said Joanne Cook, Silverthorne’s recreation and culture director. “Offering quality outdoor experiences enhances quality of life.”
She emphasized that the town understands outdoor amenities are important, but those amenities can be packaged in many different ways. Therefore, community participation is an essential part of the planning process.
“We are privileged to have so many vested residents here,” Cook said. “We can’t wait to see what they come up with.”
The POST Master Plan will be a reference for this and future town councils for the next 10 years, so it’s a unique opportunity to have your voice heard.
