11th annual Backcountry Ball Friday in Breckenridge
October 10, 2012
On Friday, join other local backcountry and huts enthusiasts for an evening benefiting the Summit Huts Association.
At the 11th annual Backcountry Ball, attendees will enjoy dinner, a silent auction and new for this year – a team trivia game. Hannah Taylor, who works for the nonprofit, said the game will test teams’ knowledge about huts, backcountry skiing and skiing in Summit County.
“It’s going to be fun and challenging,” she said.
The team with the best score will receive a prize. There will also be a couple of door prizes.
The biggest draw every year is the silent fundraiser, to which local businesses – like sports shops Mountain Outfitters and Wilderness Sports – have donated. There’s “lots of good outdoor gear” this year, Taylor said, like skis, beacons, lift tickets, packs, bindings, jackets and massage certificates.
The nonprofit usually raises between $10,000-15,000 every year; Taylor said the ball is the organization’s biggest fundraiser, and all the proceeds go to general operations.
Summit Huts manages four backcountry huts in Summit: Janet’s Cabin, Francie’s Cabin, the Section House and Ken’s Cabin. All are open for winter use from November to May.
