Summit Choral Society presents concerts in Breckenridge, Dillon

The Summit Choral Society will present its duo of summer concerts on Monday, Aug. 18, at Christ Lutheran Church in Breckenridge and Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Dillon.

The group, under the direction of Jill Schroeder-Dorn, has been the community chorus for Summit County for more than 30 years and is open to any singer in the county or surrounding areas. The repertoire for the summer concert series generally leans toward Broadway standards and pop-rock selections, said Holly Rob, an alto in the choir.

“Last year, we focused mostly on Broadway because the previous spring we had actually sung at Carnegie Hall, so we focused on that with the Broadway stuff,” Rob said. “But we always try to do rock and pop, as well.”

Selections include an Abba medley from “Mama Mia” and “Popular” from “Wicked,” as well as songs from “Jersey Boys” and “Newsies.”

“We’ve got a song from Green Day, “21 guns,” Rob said. “It’s more upbeat music that people could really, really relate to. And a lot of the songs people are going to know them. There are songs in there that everybody is going to know something, which makes it just that much more fun.”

Rob, who’s been singing with the Choral Society for a little more than a year, said she’s looking forward to the concert and performing with a group that’s helped her get back into music.

“For me, I had gotten away from music for a bit and hadn’t made time for myself,” she said. “Some things happened in my world, and I thought, you know what? I can make time for myself. It’s like finding a lost part of your soul to open your heart and sing. It’s so much fun and so enjoyable. And if we can give that back to the community in a concert, how cool is that? It’s a fun thing.”
