The town of Breckenridge announced this week Summit County’s free chipping program will return to local neighborhoods beginning the first of next month.
From Monday, Sept. 1 through Friday, Sept. 5, chipping crews will be in the town of Blue River, Spruce Valley, Warrior’s Mark and Bekkedal. Beginning Monday, Sept. 8 through Friday, Sept. 12, crews will be at Peaks 7, 8 and 9, as well as the Weisshorn, Baldy, Moonstone and Western Sky Ranch neighborhoods. Chipping crews will make their final rounds in the Breckenridge area from Monday, Sept. 15 through Friday, Sept. 19, when they visit Silver Shekel, Summit Estates, Highlands, Highland Meadows, Gold Hill and Farmer’s Korner.
The Summit County Chipping Program, funded by the Colorado Division of Natural Resources and the Summit County Wildfire Council, accepts trees, logs and branches up to 9 inches in diameter, free of nails, wire and rope. Chipping crews will not accept construction materials, treated lumber, fence posts, shrubs, root wads, stumps, weeds, bagged materials, grass clippings or trash.
Slash piles must be stacked by 8 a.m. on the Monday of the neighborhood’s designated chipping week. Piles must be stacked neatly within 5 feet of the roadway and piles may be no larger than 5 feet cubed. There is no limit to the number of piles a property owner may set out.
Additionally, town residents may also drop clean woody materials from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the north end of the satellite lot — skier parking — on Airport Road. Residents must follow the same parameters for debris as outlined above and no trimming is allowed at the drop off site.
In conjunction with the county’s free chipping program, the town of Breckenridge also is encouraging residents to take advantage of its defensible space reimbursement program. Property owners within town limits can be reimbursed $10 per tree up to a maximum of $200 per property for costs incurred to create defensible space.
In order to be eligible for reimbursement, property owners will be required to participate in two property inspections. The first inspection is a defensible space assessment, which will provide recommendations in order to create defensible space. Once the recommendations have been completed, a final inspection will determine if effective defensible space has been created and that street rights of way are clean and free of debris.
Residents have until Sept. 31 to schedule final inspections. Inspections can be scheduled by calling the Red, White, and Blue Fire Protection District at 453-2474, the Breckenridge Planning Department at 547-3188 or the Breckenridge Police Department at 453-2941.
Participation in the initial inspection is free and there in no obligation. Property owners do not need to participate in the incentive program in order to create defensible space. However, removing live trees without an inspection requires a permit.
