Lake Dillon Fire schedules free fire-safety expo

Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue will host its first fire-safety expo and festival from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, in the parking lot of the Target store in Silverthorne.

The event, which will feature activities for the whole family — including interactive displays, games and information, as well as free hot dogs and great giveaways — is free and open to the public.

Kids will get to try their hand at squirting a fire hose at a “burning” building, learning safe practices in a walk-through safety house, practice escaping from a smoke-filled building and hopping around in a bouncy house.

Adults can learn about ways to be prepared for an emergency and how to avoid fires, as well as important tools for creating defensible space around their homes and the proper use of fire extinguishers.

At 12:30 p.m., a side-by-side real fire demonstration of two identical rooms will show how sprinklers can minimize the spread of a fire in a typical residence and is the visual highlight of the event.

The expo takes the place of Lake Dillon Fire’s annual open house, with the intention of reaching a greater number of people through a high-visibility, high-energy event.

“We are delighted to invite our friends and neighbors to our first fire-safety expo,” said Lake Dillon Fire chief Dave Parmley in an agency news release. “We think this will be a lively, fun, informative and worthwhile event for everyone.”

Partner organizations participating in the festival include: The U.S. Forest Service, the Colorado State Patrol, Summit County Communications, the Summit County Wildfire Council, Silverthorne Police Department, Summit County Building Department, Kremmling Fire Department, Summit County Water Rescue, Summit County Search and Rescue, CBS-News 4 mobile weather lab, American Red Cross, Service Monkey, Summit Systems fire alarms, Tri-County Fire Extinguisher and State Farm Insurance.
