St. Anthony Summit Medical Center renames emergency department for Breckenridge Grand Vacations

St. Anthony Summit Medical Center renamed its emergency department for Breckenridge Grand Vacations in an unveiling ceremony Wednesday after the company donated $250,000 to the hospital.

When patients are sitting in the emergency department’s waiting room, the hospital’s CEO Paul Chodkowski said, “Some people are going to say, ‘This ain’t no vacation.’”

He said the donation was the largest the hospital had ever received.

In an unusual move, the time share and resort company donated the money without specifying how it should be spent, said Deb Edwards, president of the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation.

The leadership of the 35-bed hospital and its foundation, with the considerations of staff, will prioritize the facility’s greatest needs and use the money to address them, she said.

Meanwhile, visitors to the emergency department, which she said sees 15,000 patients a year, will be greeted with two signs that read, “Breckenridge Grand Vacations Emergency Department.”

The lodging company’s president, Mike Millisor, said he, his brother Rob and their partner Mike Dudick donated the money to support the hospital, help out the people who live and work in Summit and give back to the community.

“Who wants to be associated with an emergency room?” Millisor said, laughing. “It wasn’t like our goal in life was to have an emergency room named after us.”

Millisor, who started the company almost 30 years ago, said he doesn’t like to make a big deal out of philanthropy, and the decision wasn’t about publicity, marketing or sales. “It’s just the right thing for us to do.”

After the event, he said he was moved by the kind words of the hospital staff and hoped the donation would inspire others in the community to give.
