When people think of Woodward at Copper and its foam pits, trampolines and jump ramps, it’s often considered an extreme-sports training ground for terrain-park-bound teens and aspiring X Gamers. It’s an image Woodward officials have been trying to shake with a host of family-friendly activities and programs.

“What we’re trying to do is break that barrier,” Woodward general manager Morrison Hsieh said.

As part of its approach to serve all ages and abilities, Woodward will be hosting a monthlong series of classes geared toward kids 12 and younger with special emphasis on kids ages 1 to 8.

“We’ve found out you can never start too young,” Hsieh said, adding that the skills kids and even infants can learn at the facility “translate to a multitude of sports.”

Programs include a Parent and Tots class for ages 1 to 2 and Trampolines and Tumbling classes for ages 3 to 4 and 5 to 8, as well as a kids skateboard class for ages 5 to 12.

Each program will run once a week, on either Sunday or Monday, for four weeks in March. Registration for the full-length classes closes Saturday, Feb. 28. Kids and parents can sign up for the full four sessions or on an individual, drop-in basis if space allows. Classes may be canceled if they do not exceed a minimum enrollment of six.

The trampoline and tumbling and parent and infant classes will each emphasize balance, coordination and body awareness using the facility’s spring floor, foam pits and trampolines.

“With all age groups, it’s super fun jumping into a foam pit,” Hsieh said of the programs.

The idea of starting with kids at such a young age is to instill basic athletic skills early and in a safe environment. Woodward’s whole focus is on skill progression, whether it’s for someone learning to ski or skate or simply be more athletic.

Parents are required to accompany children in the tots class for kids age 2 and younger.

Classes start Sunday, March 1. Each session is 45 minutes long, and the four-week package comes at a cost of $65.
