VAIL — A high speed chase Wednesday involving four law enforcement agencies resulted in one man in custody and no injuries.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was jumping up and down on top of his car and waving his arms at passing traffic along Interstate 70 in Vail, as though he needed help, police said.

In trying to ensure that he got the help he needed, several people called 911.

Vail Police showed up moments later, but apparently that was not the kind of help he wanted, because he jumped in his car and hit the gas, obeying Horace Greeley’s most famous admonition, “Go West, young man,” which is to say he drove west, fleeing at speeds approaching triple figures, police said.

Vail Police chased him from Vail to Avon, where Avon Police put out stick strips — those strips they roll out with spikes sticking up to blow out tires and stop fleeing bad guys.

The stick strips, however, did not blow out the man’s tires, and he turned around in the emergency exit and sped east on I-70, police said.

As he was headed east he caused a traffic snarl that forced him into the median where his vehicle got bogged down and stopped.

When police approached his car, they discovered a little girl inside traveling with him, according to police.

He was arrested and taken to the Vail jail.
