A State Highway 9 crash in Breckenridge closed traffic in both directions late Friday afternoon, as Colorado State Patrol officers investigated a resulting fatality. Trooper Tim Sutherland said the accident involved a Smart car and a garbage truck.

The driver of the smart car, a 72-year-old male from Boca Raton, Florida, died in the crash. According to the Colorado State Patrol report, the man was turning left onto southbound Highway 9 from Revette Drive, but failed to yield to a garbage truck that was driving north on the highway. Both vehicles collided on the driver side.

Sutherland the 72-year-old male was not wearing a seatbelt, but no alcohol or drugs were involved. The highway was reopened at 3:44 p.m., more than an hour after the collision.

“We’re still in the beginning stages of our investigation,” Sutherland said. “We’ve had a lot of fatalities this year. People need to be cognizant of their surroundings and pay attention.”
