Summit Up

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world’s only daily column that’s basking in the glory of summer in the High Country. Summer, that wonderful almost mythical season in the mountains that comes and goes so quickly some years we think we might have imagined that it ever happened at all. Summer, that happiest time of flip flops and hiking and wildflowers and trying to remember where we put our bathing suit.

Folks, as you well know there are a few sure signs that the most verdant of seasons has arrived in Summit County. The locals peering out their front doors, snow shovels at the ready, blinking confusedly at that green stuff beginning to sprout up in their normally white front yards. Visitors asking directions to bike rental shops. Boats on Dillon Reservoir. And sunsets. We have to say, Summit County in the summer has too many charms to name in this column of limited space, but those nightly blindingly beautiful sunsets have to be among the best.

A Mr. D. Harlan of Silverthorne was kind enough to share this photo of a recent Summit County sunset, in case you missed it, which you probably didn’t because, like most sunsets, it was in the sky. Love the colors. We can practically feel the lawn chairs under our butts and the latest cold summer label from the Breckenridge Brewery in our hands. Yum, yum.

Folks, speaking of summer, this is also the time of year we all become very outdoorsy and adventurous. OK, most of you are that way all year round, but for us it’s pretty much just when it’s warm outside. In any event, it’s a good time to remember that just because it’s less likely that some vengeful mountain is plotting to drop an avalanche on your head, doesn’t mean the time is ripe to let your guard down. The rivers are rising and so is the fire danger so please continue to be smart and cautious out there. We hate having to cover mother-in-laws lost in high water and the like, so let’s keep our summer shenanigans on the safe side.

By the by, while we have your attention, you may have noticed that this very column is in undergoing a bit of a change. There will be, as the months wear on, fewer Summit Up-isms here in the paper and more on our Facebook page, where the fun-loving spirit of this column will live on full strength. Please keep posting your globetrotter photos, birthday notifications, Angel and Scum Alerts and all that great stuff you love about Summit Up to our Facebook page and you’ll see it popping up here in the paper as well. Like us and get to sharing at facebook.com/SummitDailyNews.

That’s all we’ve got for you today folks.

We out.
