Breck council’s health care vote misguided
The taxpaying residents of Breckenridge are apparently going to start paying for the health insurance premiums for our town council beginning with 2014 elections. Did anyone on the council think to ask taxpayers if they approve of this measure, voted in unanimously by the council? Yes, health insurance premiums have skyrocketed — and my husband and I can barely afford our own health insurance, much less pay more in taxes for council members’ premiums. I believe most council members work elsewhere in addition to serving on the town council, so why shouldn’t they have to pay their own health insurance premiums like the rest of us do who have jobs? I don’t approve of paying more taxes than we already do. Those of us who live and work here need to wake up and pay attention to what’s going on. I would like to see an addendum to the article that appeared in Wednesday’s Summit Daily stating how much it will cost each taxpayer for this measure. !
Regardless of the amount, the principle remains the same — the council voted in a measure without consulting the taxpayers who have to foot the bill. The town seems to forget that they’re hired to serve the citizens of Breckenridge — not dictate to taxpayers and assume whatever they do is fine with us, because it’s definitely not.
