Popular ski area bar at Arapahoe Basin undergoes summer transformatiom

A summer makeover is underway at a popular winter destination frequented by skiers and boarders as they relax between runs.

Construction began on the $1 million 6th Alley Bar renovation project at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area right after the close of the season. The bar has been cleared out and gutted and will be revamped for the 2013-14 ski season.

Though the space is being expanded, keeping its cozy feel was important to the ski area, said Leigh Hierholzer, A-Basin spokeswoman.

“We really want to keep that A-Basin comfortable feel, but expand the offerings,” she said.

The extensive remodel will increase the space for patrons. Construction workers will be taking out a wall and adding seating throughout the area. A new ADA-compliant restroom is being added.

The new establishment will feature a larger bar, an area for live music and better views of the mountain, Hierholzer said. “We are also going to have added balcony seating overlooking a live music area and additional big screen TVs.”

The third-floor balcony seating, referred to as “the perch” will be weatherproofed, further protecting it from wind and snow.

In addition to increased space, the new and improved bar will feature an expanded menu and wider selection of drinks for patrons, Hierholzer said.

“We will still serving up the same great Bloody Marys. We will also be adding about 20 Colorado-crafted beers on tap.”

The name will even be broadened to better reflect the new and improved establishment. It will be called the 6th Alley Bar and Grill.

Chef Christopher Rybak said he’s looking forward to offering better, faster service for guests with the expanded menu offerings and table service at A-basin for the first time.

The space will be a comfortable, open and inviting for locals, visitors and after-shift employees to enjoy, Hierholzer said.

The 6th Alley Bar and Grill renovation began on June 10. It is slated to re-open around Thanksgiving.
