Red Canyon Fire 100 percent contained

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — The Red Canyon Fire southeast of here was declared “essentially 100 percent contained” as of about 4 p.m. on Friday, according to Bill Kight, public information officer for the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team.

Kight said the fire had not grown on Friday, and that fire officials had released up to a half-dozen engines to go to other fires in Utah and Wyoming, as fire fighting activities wind down here.

“Everybody got to go home today, and all the electricity is back on,” he said, referring to residents evacuated as a precautionary measure, and to a power outage ordered by fire officials concerned about powerlines in the area of the fire.

Fire officials said no structures were lost and there were no injuries as a result of the fire.

“We’ve got the fire lassoed pretty much all the way around at this time, except for natural obstacles,” Kight continued, noting that it is likely that the fire management will be turned over to the Garfield County Sheriff and local fire departments by tomorrow.

Kight said the containment lines surrounding the scorched area will be left as the outer perimeter of the fire area, and the local fire departments will be in charge of monitoring the area in case it flares up again and begins to expand.

For the time being, Garfield County Road 115 (Red Canyon Road) will remain closed to traffic from the gate near State Highway 82 to the gate on the east side of the fire area at County Road 119 (Kindall Road). Lookout Mountain Road will be open to residents of the area only.
