Frisco sandcastle competition winners

The Frisco Marina Bay heated up with competition during the Second annual Sandcastle Competition with more than 30 children competing on 22 different teams. The Copper Mountain mascot Elkquin made an appearance as a celebrity judge for the event. Sandcastles came in all shapes and sizes with additions like moats, dinosaurs and gummy worms. All had fun but Team Sunflowers took the overall 1st place with their sandcastle complete with a draw bridge, turrets, pretzels and a moat.

Enjoy food, film in support of Summit Tigers mtn. bike team

Please come support the Summit Tigers Mountain Bike Team as it presents the inspirational film, Singletrack High, Thursday evening at the Colorado Mountain College auditorium in Breckenridge. The film is about how high school students have been impacted by mountain biking. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for free food until it runs out and door prizes. The movie will start at 7 p.m. Suggested donations to attend this event are $20 for adults and $10 for students and will be collected at the door. All proceeds will benefit the team. CMC Breckenridge is located at 107 Denison Placer Road, Breckenridge.

Join 9NEWS Denver in a live broadcast from Breckenridge

The public is invited to join Susie Wargin from 9NEWS (KUSA) Denver in a live broadcast from downtown Breckenridge on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. Free cowbells available for the first 50 people on the streets; free coffee and donuts for race fans start at 6 a.m. How will we know you’re a race fan? Brain Injury Support Group

Please join us on Thursday, Aug. 22, at The Church at Agape Outpost for our Summer Pot Luck Picnic and Get Together from 5:30-6:30 pm. This support group is for all brain injury survivors, their supporters and friends and meets the fourth Thursday of every month. Come join us! Resort Chamber mixer

The Breckenridge Resort Chamber (BRC) Ambassadors are hosting the August Member Appreciation Mixer at Alpine Bank located at 110 North Main St., Breckenridge. The mixer will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday. The mixer is sponsored by Alpine Bank. Beer will be provided by Bud Light. There is no cost to attend the mixer. Volunteer to help victims of assault

Are you ready for a new volunteer opportunity? Become a volunteer with Advocates for Victims of Assault. Work with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and trauma. Fall Volunteer training begins on Sept. 9. Please call (970) 668-3906 for more information or to sign up.

Summit County Pickleball Club Tournament

The Summit County Pickleball Club is holding it’s inter-club tournament on Aug. 28 and 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Dillon Town Park tennis courts on La Bonte St. in Dillon. Come out and watch the fastest-growing participant sport in the U.S. You can also chat with our players and find out how you can learn to play this fun game and join the Club. Pickleball is a great way to stay active and to socialize with a group of local enthusiasts.

Great Rubber Duck Race

It’s that time of year again ... yellow ducks will be descending on Summit County, making their way to the 26th annual Great Rubber Duck Race sponsored by Grand Lodge on Peak 7. The race will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31 along the Blue River in Breckenridge! We still need dedicated individuals to help sell ducks throughout the month of August. We will be at the following locations: Dillon Farmers Market, Breck City Market, Dillon City Market, Breck post office, day of race (Aug. 31), day after race (Sept. 1). We have a variety of two- to four-hour shifts available to fit your schedule! Last year we raised close to $100,000 through this event. Your support will help us reach that goal again this year. Oktoberfest volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to serve at the Frisco Oktoberfest Friday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Frisco Adventure Park. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt, food and beverage. Support this fundraiser for the Summit Community Orchestra by helping for a 4- to 6-hour shift. To volunteer, call Freddy Powell at (970) 668-3257.

Applause! 19th annual Pig Roast

Applause! the special events, fundraising committee of the Breckenridge Music Festival, hosts a variety of parties and functions to support the BMF. Through these social affairs, Applause! volunteers provide a wonderful venue to strengthen the Summit County community and at the same time raise a substantial portion of the annual BMF budget. Everyone is invited to participate! Applause! presents the 19th annual Pig Roast at the wonderful home of hosts Sherrie and Chuck Calderini in Blue River. The event has become a local institution and will feature great food, good company and the blue grass sounds of local favorite band The Pine Beatles. The Calderinis have hosted the event for the past 19 years. “We got the idea to do a pig roast because it worked well in Illinois, and we thought it would be a perfect thing to do in our Breckenridge surroundings,” Sherrie Calderini said. “This has certainly proven to be the case, and we have met so many wonderful people hosting it.” Sunday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. For reservations call Sherrie Calderini at (970) 453-8446 or Diana Dettemerring at (970) 453-0506.

Get info on Leadership Summit program

Leadership Summit, now in its ninth year, will select up to 20 Summit County citizens, all of whom have a demonstrated interest in community engagement and leadership, to participate in this year’s program of nine full-day community-focused sessions meeting once a month, September through May. Founded by a group of Summit County Rotarians, the program provides an opportunity for participants to broaden their knowledge of the community while enhancing their leadership skills.
