I have trekked in many places on this planet and have always come home to the most pristine trails in the world. Unfortunately, the past few years have witnessed an increasingly disturbing trend – the plastic dog poop bag at the side of the trail. Last week I was at Herman’s Lake and counted 16 poop bags laid at the side of the trail on the way to the lake. We were the last to leave the lake that day and unfortunately I counted 11 on the way back down. It is unlikely that they will be picked up anytime soon. Even if they are retrieved on the way down the trail, why should those seeking a pristine backcountry environment have to walk by countless poop bags? When did it become OK to leave this trash at the side of the trail? There are multiple other options for disposing of pet waste and leaving non-biodegradable, unsightly plastic bags on the trail is an unacceptable option. Let’s be considerate of all who enjoy the backcountry for its beauty and purity.
