A ballroom full of jazz fans bobbed their heads, clapped their hands and tapped their toes as a group of international stars poured their souls into their songs — arching backs and raising heads as their instruments reached high crescendos and crouching down as the music dropped into lulling low notes.
Hundreds of jazz fans came to watch some of their favorite musicians play at the 29th annual Genuine Jazz and Wine festival at Copper Mountain. The Saturday-afternoon lineup included Kim Waters, Rick Braun, Marion Meadows, Elan Trotman and Paul Taylor in an All-Star Jam.
“Not only do they sound good, but they look good too,” said Genuine Jazz and Wine host Becky Taylor after the show.
The festivities went on throughout night, and will continue throughout the day today.
The event is attracting many people from the Front Range for a weekend escape from the city to enjoy the mountain scenery. There’s just something about jazz music that makes everyone listening have a great time, fans at the festival said.
“I like the smoothness of it, the romance of it,” said Shirley Austin, an Aurora resident who’s turned the festival into a girls’ weekend with her friends for the past few years.
Kimberly Hert is attracted to the music for the same reason.
“It’s so soft and so soothing to the mind and the body,” she said.
The festival attracts a high-profile lineup of jazz musicians, performing in Copper’s Conference Center Ballroom, and outdoors, throughout the weekend.
“The lineup is awesome — truly awesome,” Hert said.
When asked who her favorite was, she said, “Paul Taylor.”
Taylor was one of Nicole Brown’s favorites as well. She came to the jazz festival with her counterpart, Dewayne Glenn. The couple said they decided to leave the city behind to enjoy some downtime together.
Brown and Glenn said the addition of wine tastings and food offerings held throughout the weekend creates a complementary addition to the musical mix.
“I like a lot of different wines, particularly whites, and they have a good lineup here,” Glenn said. “Listening to great music relaxes you. Having some nice wine to go with it puts everybody in a mellow mood to have a good time.“
