Breckenridge’s Discovery Ridge Trail project needs volunteers

A new section of trail in Breckenridge will be short but sweet.

Volunteers can join up with the Friends of Breckenridge Trails from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday Sept. 7 to help construct a new section of trail, which will connect Discovery Ridge Trail to Gold Run Road at the north end of town.

Tony Overlock, lead trails technician, said the connector piece will make riding the trails easier.

“We’re trying to piece together the big picture,” he said. “We’re connecting town trails to the larger network of trails we have, so people can ride all through town.”

Anyone interested in participating should meet behind Town Hall, 150 Ski Hill Rd., at 9 a.m. where juice, coffee and snacks will be available.

Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses, sturdy footwear and a water bottle. All other materials, such as tools, will be provided.

The new part of the trail will be a short 300-foot section, Overlock said. He said now people will be able to use a single continuous track in the area.

“We always try to do some education on our volunteer days, like teaching people what makes for a good trail design,” he said.

Overlock said this project is part of an attempt to piece together more in Breckenridge for a better user experience.

Basic trail construction, he said, involves using tools to cut into the ground. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend, he said. Other tasks include removing organic material off the planned path, such as weeds.

“You need to dig down to mineral earth, the really good ground,” Overlock said. “That makes for a sustainable trail that will last and have good drainage.”

This new section of trail will be key for future efforts to extend out and establish connections with the Colorado trail and Golden Horseshoe in the future.

Every volunteer must fill out a 2013 Trail Volunteer Waiver Form, available at www.townofbreckenridge.com/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=1691. A signed copy must be brought to check in. Register by emailing Overlock at tonyo@townofbreckenridge.com.
