Fire crews responding to a report of an unknown substance on the intersection of Highway 6 and Swan Mountain road at about 3:15 p.m. on Friday discovered a chemical spill.
Crews are working to clean up and contain the substance, reported to be the hardening catalyst for epoxy traffic paint, said Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue Public-Information Officer Steve Lipsher.
The material was reportedly leaked onto the road when a highway contract vehicle blew a line containing one of the substances used to paint lines on the road. About 100 to 150 yards of the road was covered with the material, Lipsher said.
Highway 6 is open, but Swan Mountain Road has been reduced to one-lane in each direction while the spill is being contained, Lipsher said. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
An unknown number of vehicles drove through the substance, Lipsher said. “It’s a material you don’t want to spread,” he said.
People who may have driven through this should contact State Patrol, which can advise motorists about how to clean it up.
