Eye on the Tiger: Kaitlin Raymond

Summit High School senior Kaitlin “Kates” Raymond has just played out the final volleyball matches of her high school career. She’s been on school volleyball teams since fifth grade and spent her senior year as team co-captain alongside teammate Davis Gidney. She enjoys her position of outside hitter, which allows her to attack the ball. At the high school she’s also part of the National Honor Society and the lacrosse team. She spends her free time hanging out with friends and skiing with her family.

Why did you decide to join the volleyball team?

“My mom. She played all the way through college, so I just wanted to try it. I like it a lot.”

What do you like best about playing volleyball?

“I like how competitive everything is and how it’s such a team-related sport. Everything is based off (of teamwork) — a perfect set would come from a perfect pass, and from there on everything (follows). It’s really team-related and you have to do everything (together).”

As team co-captain, what are your responsibilities?

“You have to make sure that everyone on the team gets along together, make sure all the balls and everything are put away. I just be a leader and have a good attitude and everything. I like (being co-captain) a lot. This season’s really fun.”

What has playing volleyball taught you?

“I’ve learned how to be a good leader and how to get along with people and what it takes to be a good teammate.”

For example — “Getting along on the court: you have to talk a lot and you have to communicate and tell each other where to hit, but you have to say it in a nice tone of voice.”

How has this season been going?

“I think we’ve come a long way. We’ve definitely had our ups and downs, and we’ve gotten a lot better since the beginning of the season. That’s exciting to see. It’s been exciting to see the young players progress a lot; we have a young team.”

What were your most memorable moments?

“I would say last year was pretty memorable, because at the end of the season we won seven games in a row, so that was really exciting. Also memorable moments (were) just getting to know everyone, even on the lower levels. That’s always really fun.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I might (play volleyball in college). I’m talking to a couple coaches right now. … I might play at Adams State (University) in Alamosa, and also maybe in Jamestown College in North Dakota.”

“I’m really excited. I think it’s going to be a fun experience.”

Do you have a favorite professional sports team?

“I don’t have a favorite, no, but I do watch sports. I watch pretty much everything. … I’ve gone to a couple of the CU (volleyball) games.”

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

“Tall — for a girl I’m really tall (laughs). Athletic, I guess. And, positive.”

What’s on your playlist?

“We have a playlist that we listen to. Mostly it’s like, some hip hop songs, and there’s a couple country songs (laughs). It just gets me really excited and ready to go.”

Wild Card Question: If you could choose any superpower, what would it be?

“I would probably say to be invisible, because it would be cool to just sneak around.”
