A&E briefs: Peak Performance in Breckenridge offers free cycling classes

The Breckenridge Resort Chamber welcomed a new business to town this week, Peak Performance Sports Massage and Fitness. On Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10, Peak Performance will be offering free introductory indoor cycling classes at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call (970) 547-0400 to reserve a spot.

A ribbon cutting for the new business will be held Monday, Nov. 18. Peak Performance is located at 100 N. Main St. on the top floor and provides sport and therapeutic massage, as well as yoga and indoor cycling classes.

expo returns to Denver

The 22nd annual Colorado Ski and Snowboard Expo continues Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10, in downtown Denver at the Colorado Convention Center in Hall A.

The gigantic sale is a “must” for mountain-bound slope sliders in need of every kind of gear — skis, snowboards, boots, helmets, jackets, outerwear and essential accessories such as hats, goggles and gloves. Prices on last season’s inventory and special buys from manufacturers are marked down 40 percent to 75 percent.

Besides the shopping opportunity, representatives from 24 Colorado resorts, Ski Utah and other western and Canadian resorts will have updates on new developments on their mountains and specials on everything from lodging, lift tickets and lessons to discounts on dining and mountain resort activities.

For the third year, the Rocky Mountain Brew Fest — a mellow beer-tasting event inside the Expo, will offer a growing selection of hand-crafted beers and ales poured by the local Colorado brewers producing them. A separate and additional ticket for the Brew Fest is required.

Dillon Dam Brewery

The Dillon Dam Brewery celebrates another Tap it Tuesday on Tuesday, Nov. 12, with a five-gallon keg of the brewmaster’s special stash tapped at 5 p.m. This week’s beer is the Chardonnay Barrel-Aged Dam Gogh de Garde, with $5 half-pints while they last.

This is the Bier de Garde that was brewed as a collaboration project to celebrate the world exclusive 2012 Van Gogh exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. After much study, brewmaster Cory Forster discovered that Vincent Van Gogh would have consumed many beers like this one while traveling through and painting the French countryside. Picture an old wooden barrel in the darkest, coolest corner of the barn with a heap of foam on top spilling over in open, wild yeast fermentation.

To recreate this brew, the brewery used 11 varieties of mild malts with just a touch of caramel malt sweetness to balance out the funky spice and fruitiness of the farmhouse ale yeast. Applewood and French oak spirals in the fermenter give it a hint of the old wooden barrel, while just a bit of anise in the boil and dry hop lend a bit of flavor from Van Gogh’s favorite drink, absinthe. The result is a copper-blonde ale with an amazing aroma of fruit and spice and a complex yet subtly balanced and extremely drinkable finish. Served in snifters.

Adult reading program continues at library

A local author will present the next program for “Keep Calm and Read On,” the fall adult reading program for Summit County libraries. Climber, author and photographer Dave Cooper shares his adventures and photographs on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

The author of two books, “Colorado Snow Climbs” and “Colorado Scrambles,” Cooper was born in Yorkshire, England, and holds a doctorate in physics. He has spent the past 25 years exploring the Colorado mountains and has climbed extensively in many of the world’s great ranges, including the Andes, Himalayas, Canadian Rockies and the Alaska Range. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and will be held at the County Commons Building, 0037 County Road 1005 in Frisco.

Warming Hut reopens for ski season

The Warming Hut Restaurant in Breckenridge reopened for the winter season on Friday, Nov. 1. Tuesday through Sunday, the restaurant features happy hour après ski from 3 to 5:30 p.m., with special pricing on appetizers, wine, beer, cocktails and hot toddies.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, Supper Club returns to The Warming Hut. This quarterly event sells out every time, so patrons are encouraged to get their reservations early. The theme is Croatia: The Adriatic and Dalmatian Coast, with a four-course dinner and wine pairings for $55 per person. On New Year’s Eve, there will be four dinner seatings at the restaurant, 4, 6, 8 and 10 p.m. Reservations are open now online at www.opentable.com, or call the restaurant at (970) 389-3104.
