Woodward at Copper is kicking off the winter season Friday with a host of free public events running through the weekend to celebrate their newly renovated indoor facility. Events will include free public training sessions Saturday and Sunday, and a number of pro and staff demonstrations as well as a meet-and-greet with members of the U.S. freeski and snowboard teams on Saturday.
“Woodward Remix is a great opportunity if you’ve never tried it before. We’re really excited to be able to offer it free to the public,” Copper Mountain Resort spokesperson Stephanie Sweeney said.
Earlier in the year the multi-sport indoor training facility underwent a $500,000 renovation.
The major changes include Woodward converting their Snowflex synthetic carpeted jump ramps — for skiing and snowboarding — to wooden Skatelite material used on skateboarding and BMX half-pipes and features. Now the foam pit jump ramps can be used by skateboarders and bike riders as well as skiers and snowboarders. With the change, skiers and snowboarders now use Woodward’s patented wheeled-ski technology.
The other focus of the renovation was on learning progression, adding more beginner-friendly features including a small foam pit with a less intimidating beginner jump.
The 19,400-square-foot indoor facility also includes training mats and trampolines with foam pits for guests to practice basic to advanced aerial maneuvers.
Those new to Woodward will go through a basic introductory tumbling course and learn how to use their trampolines. The progression then leads to the smaller jumps and eventually the large foam pit ramps.
As part of the Woodward Remix weekend, they will be offering free introductory sessions on Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Watch and meet the Pros
As a part of the Remix weekend, Woodward will host pro skate, BMX, ski and snowboard demonstrations from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, followed by an athlete meet-and-greet from 5-6 p.m. that will include X Games competitors and members of the U.S. freeski and snowboard teams.
“The meet-and-great is a great chance for people to talk to these athletes and get a poster signed,” Sweeney said of the event.
Staff members will have some posters on hand and guests are encouraged to bring items to get signed.
Pro skateboarders Curren Caples and Louie Lopez and X Games bronze medalist Jono Schwan are scheduled to attend along with BMX riders Morgan Wade, Gary Young and X Games gold medalist Zack Warden.
U.S. ski and snowboard team star Gretchen Bleiler will be among the U.S. team athletes at the meet-and-greet. She is expected to be joined by Maddie Bowman, Brita Sigourney, Wing-Tai Barrymore and Nik Baden. Additional athletes may also be in attendance. The entire U.S. freeski and snowboard teams are scheduled to train from 8:30-10 a.m. in the half-pipe above Center Village. Guests will be able to watch training from the deck outside of Jacks, near the Burning Stones Plaza in the Village.
