Traffic is just beginning to move on Interstate 70 following a closure in the westbound lane between Georgetown and the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel, the Colorado Department of Transportation reported.
CDOT officials cited several car crashes between the Silverthorne exit and Georgetown and severe weather for the closure. CDOT employees are currently “pacing traffic” up the hill from Georgetown to the tunnels, said CDOT spokesman Bob Wilson.
There are no alternate routes as U.S. 6 also is closed at Loveland Pass, also due to severe weather. There is no information about when the pass would reopen.
“If you don’t have to travel, it’s a good idea not to because the storm is supposed to get worse before it gets better,” Wilson said. “Temperatures are getting really low in addition to the snow, so we’re going to have ice and winter driving conditions for the next two to three days.”
