Leadville man died from hypothermia, coroner reports

The Lake County Coroner is calling the death of a man found late last month in Leadville an accident.

Gary Kepley, 52, of Leadville, was discovered dead the morning of Nov. 25 on an undisclosed street in the city limits. Although officials acknowledged community concerns that Kepley may have been the victim of an attack, Lake County Coroner Shannon Kent said hypothermia appears to be the cause of death.

“It is understood that there have been concerns in the community regarding homicide or possible assault, however through the results of very thorough and professional investigations on behalf of the Leadville Police Department and the Lake County District Attorney’s office, in conjunction with the medical investigation performed by the Coroner office, this is not believed to be the case,” Kent said in a news release. “These concerns were specifically addressed and the evidence obtained draws the conclusion toward Mr. Kepley’s death being an accident.”

The coroner’s office is awaiting further medical results before finalizing the cause of death, Kent said.
