Choral society breakfast
The Summit Choral Society will hold a benefit breakfast on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Elks Lodge, 1321 Blue River Parkway in Silverthorne. Part of the proceeds will help to fund a music scholarship for a high school senior. The food will be plentiful and good; the bacon is outstanding. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Wild About Colorado Festival
Wildflower enthusiasts and aspiring artists will enjoy tours and workshops offered as part of the Wild About Colorado Art & Outdoor Festival hosted by Continental Divide Land Trust in Breckenridge Aug. 14-17. Leadership Summit, now in its ninth year, will select up to 20 Summit County citizens, all of whom have a demonstrated interest in community engagement and leadership, to participate in this year’s program of nine full-day community-focused sessions meeting once a month, September through May. Rummage sale, silent auction
The Summit Seniors Annual Gigantic Rummage Sale and Silent Auction opens at 5 p.m. tonight with a special pre-sale that will close at 8 p.m. An admission fee of $10 for ages 11 and up and $5 for under age 11 will be charged during these pre-sales hours only. The event will be held at Summit County Community and Senior Center, 0083 Nancy’s Place, Frisco. Regular sale hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16 and 17, and 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 18. There will be no admission fee on these days. Indoor sales, with the exception of boutique items, will be $2 per bagful Sunday. Boutique and all other items will be greatly reduced. Donations of clean, good-condition rummage will be accepted at the center from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Aug. 14. Please don’t leave items at other times. Circle the Summit offers In-person Registration
The sixth annual Circle the Summit Bike Ride is Saturday, Aug. 17 and in-person registration is available from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Wilderness Sports in Frisco. Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival returns
The Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival will return to Summit County for its 16th season during the week of Sept. 14-21. Co-artistic directors Rieko Aizawa and Jesse Mills have invited four additional classical artists to join them for two public concerts and two soirees. Concerts will be held at the Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Dillon; soirees will be held at private homes two evenings during the festival week. Real-life homeowner wildfire experiences
We will hear directly from a homeowner who has gone through a major wildfire, lost much and published a book about the experience to help others be better prepared for similar outcomes. Award-winning author and researcher Linda Masterson tackles a subject she knows all too well in “Surviving Wildfire: Get Prepared, Stay Alive, Rebuild Your Life (A Handbook for Homeowners).” Masterson’s home and 72-acre tree farm burned to the ground in a Colorado wildfire in 2011, leaving her with little but her laptop and a fierce determination to get back on her feet and get on with her life. Request for proposals
The Victim Assistance and Law Enforcement Board of the Fifth Judicial District, which is Clear Creek, Eagle, Lake and Summit counties, is seeking grant applications from agencies and organizations to provide assistance services to crime victims. The funding cycle is Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014. The board is committed to funding programs that provide direct services to crime victims and implement the Victims’ Rights Amendment. It may also consider scholarships for training that is related to the welfare of victims. Revenue for this fund is generated from a surcharge or fees assessed to people who are convicted of felonies, misdemeanors, traffic offenses and fish and game violations. These funds are authorized by Title 24, Article 4.2, Colorado Revised Statutes. During the 2013 12-month grant cycle, the board awarded a total of $300,230.00 to 12 agencies that provide services to victims in the Fifth Judicial District. It is anticipated that approximately $300,000 will be available for the 2014 grant cycle. FUNDING PRIORITIES: Programs that are required to implement the Victim’s Rights Constitutional Amendment, programs that provide direct services to crime victims and witnesses as outlined in the V.A.L.E. statute, victim-related training, equipment and personnel needs of law enforcement agencies. The V.A.L.E. Board may also take into consideration actors other than those stated above, in making their final decisions. Board members may award money for projects not designated in the priority categories. Completed grant applications must be received by the board administrator by 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, 2013. Housing authority needs volunteers
The Summit Combined Housing Authority (SCHA) is seeking individuals to fill at least three open positions on its volunteer advisory board. Volunteers must be able to devote two to four hours per month (on average) to SCHA board meetings and other associated functions. King Boletus Mushroom Festival
The 17th annual King Boletus Mushroom Festival, a fundraiser for Buena Vista Heritage, will be Aug. 17-18 in Buena Vista. The event features a two-day mushroom seminar with classroom lectures and mountain forays. The mushroom festival educates participants in the art of hunting for and identifying mushrooms in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. Registration fee is $80 ($70 for Buena Vista Heritage members) and includes lunch on Saturday, a wine-and-cheese reception Saturday evening and a light lunch on Sunday. The seminar starts on Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Hall, 338 N. Railroad St., with check-in beginning at 8:30 a.m. Mushroom expert Ellen Jacobson and other members of the Colorado Mycological Society will present slides, display tables, handouts and information on locating and identifying mushrooms. In the afternoon, attendees will carpool to the local mountains to go on mushroom forays. After the forays, participants will gather to compare and identify the mushrooms they have collected. ‘Walk with a Doc’ this summer
“Walk with a Doc” is a free community walk-and-talk event led by a health-care practitioner from High Country Healthcare, Summit County’s Family Practice, Pediatrics and OB/GYN Specialists physicians group. McCullough Gulch trail work
Friends of the Dillon Ranger District will conduct extensive trail reconstruction on the McCullough Gulch trail, south of Breckenridge. Trail Construction will take place Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July 15 to Aug. 16. Hikers are highly encouraged to use alternate trails during this time or to return on the weekends. The trail will be impassable for much of the day, including access to White Falls loop hike. Hikers will be asked to wait up to 30 minutes, each way, to allow volunteers to work safely on the trail. Photography workshop to benefit Domus Pacis
Nationally renowned nature photographer John Fielder will host an all-day photography workshop on Saturday, Aug. 3 at his home in Silverthorne. The event will include personal instruction in nature landscape photography and technique, as well as dinner prepared by Doug Schwartz, chef at the CMC Culinary School. The cost is $275/person, with all proceeds going to Domus Pacis Family Respite. The mission of Domus Pacis is to provide families impacted by cancer a week of respite and peace in Summit County’s High Country. Summit Public Radio & TV is seeking several board members to fill specific positions. Our nonprofit organization is managed by an all volunteer, working board - we have no paid staff. As a result of this management structure, 100 percent of all contributions are used for operations. Support Black Forest fire victims
In support of the hundreds of victims of the devastating Black Forest fire, Alpine Bank will host a food drive to collect donations for their benefit. Contributions can be dropped off at any Summit County Alpine Bank location through July 10. Items needed include: water, sports drinks, canned and boxed meals, soup, cereal, peanut butter, snacks and canned fruits and vegetables. After July 10, collected donations will be delivered to the Salvation Army and the Care and Share food bank in Colorado Springs for distribution to fire victims.

The Summit Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. Jill Schroeder-Dorn, is currently rehearsing for its summer program. They recently performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, singing the Brahms Requiem. The current program is of lighter music, including songs of New York and Broadway. Summit Preschool taking applications
Summit County Preschool is now taking applications for before- and after-school child care for elementary-age children attending Frisco Elementary School for the 2013-14 school year. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or stop by at 70 W. Main St. in Frisco to pick up an enrollment packet. Before-school hours start at 7:30 a.m., and the students are taken to the bus stop for transportation to school. After-school students are transported from the school to a bus stop near the preschool where they are picked up and care is provided until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $20 for Mondays and $15 a day Tuesday through Friday.
