Democrats plan to pass tuition aid for immigrants
November 9, 2012
DENVER (AP) – The Democratic sponsor of a bill to grant tuition help to Colorado illegal immigrant students says she plans to introduce legislation that is more substantial than what Republicans defeated when they were in the majority.
Denver Democratic Rep. Crisanta Duran said Friday that legislation to help illegal immigrants who graduate from Colorado high schools could provide more aid than what’s been proposed the last two years.
Democrats tried to gain Republican support to pass the bill the last two years by proposing a third category of tuition for illegal immigrants so they would still pay more than in-state students, but less than out-of-state students.
Senate Democrats passed the bill, but House Republicans defeated it.
Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature after Tuesday’s elections and have more leeway to pass the bill next year.
