For the price of a round of golf, players can swing and putt away and know their money will support public education in Summit County.

The Education Foundation of the Summit will host its first annual Golf FORE Education Tournament at the Keystone Ranch and Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 8.

All proceeds from the tournament, the nonprofit’s second fundraising event of the year, will go to support public school students and teachers in the Summit School District .

“The Education Foundation has raised more than $200,000 to support education in just four years, and community support for Golf FORE Education will provide even more opportunities for students and teachers this school year,” said Bonnie Ward, vice chair of the nonprofit and one of the event organizers

The nonprofit was formed in 2010 by an all-volunteer group of parents and community members, and most of its money goes to innovation and technology in school programs with a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math).

Ward said the addition of art to STEM is part of a nationwide movement that recognizes students who are successful in the other areas must also be innovative and creative.

The nonprofit has a budget this year of $68,000, which it will use to award scholarships to high school seniors and more than $10,000 in grants to classroom teachers.

In the spring of 2014, the nonprofit gave $15,000 to 19 teachers, mostly to provide new technology for classrooms.

Tournament fees are $500 per team of four or $125 per person and include 18 holes with a cart, lunch, gift bag and refreshments for each player. People can also sponsor a hole for $100 and donate at a silent auction filled with prizes including restaurant and retail gift certificates.

To register a team, sponsor a hole or donate a raffle item, contact Kyle Spencer at (970) 468-7231 or kyle.spencer@efirstbank.com.
